society structure. Who was Sam Patch? Sam Patch was many things. He was a simple cotton
spinner, but many identify him as the daredevil who jumped different falls for the sake of
entertaining the crowd and getting an income. Sam was born in 1807, Rhode Island at a place
called Pawtucket. He later moved to Patterson, New Jersey, when he was still a youth and started
a cotton mill of his own with the partnership of an Englishman. However, the Englishman later
ran away with all the funds leaving Sam Patch penniless. For the purpose of earning an income,
Sam seized an opportunity to jump an eighty foot ledge before a crowd over the Passaic Falls on
September 30, 1827 (Bruno).
