Thomas Paine Critique, March 11, 2017 American Revolution The late Eighteenth century, the period between 1775 and 1783 is a historical moment marked forever in the history of American Independence. Thomas Paine, an emigrant from England who arrived in Philadelphia late in 1774, contributed a measure to this cause. Upon arrival, with time, started associating himself with a group of advocates vouching for the American cause. During this period, there were tensions between the British colonial government and the residents of the thirteen colonies in North America, Great Britain. In 1775, Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet addressed to the American people of the thirteen colonies advocating independence from Great Britain. This pamphlet that he wrote title, “Common Sense,” was published on January 10th 1776. He was very crafty as it was published anonymously at the onset of the American Revolution. It spread fast like wild fire as it was distributed widely reaching a large audience and sparked an immense sensation on the common man urging them to fight for an egalitarian government. He imparted common sense upon the people who did not even give the thought of independence any consideration whatsoever. The words he used in his argument for independence were not mere meek words of persuasion but rather an attack on the principles of monarchy and hereditary succession. Sounds kinda rude and radical if you ask me, which begs the question, why would he take such a radical approach? See Thomas was smart, he knew that in order for them to truly attain independence, the people had to strongly believe that the rules and principles governing them were not just, and this includes the monarchy and hereditary succession. He says in his pamphlet that all men are originally equals and believes that no one is exalted above the rest. By so doing, he transformed people’s thinking and forced them to willingly to change their perspective. This could be one of the many motives which fueled the Americans of the thirteen colonies to fight for a change which is aimed at providing equal rights to everyone in the great American Revolution. His belief that the British principles and monarchy rules were unfair and unjust, influenced Thomas to write the pamphlet which is credited for uniting the American colonialists and politicians who were after the same cause, which was to free themselves from the Great Britain. Thomas Paine Critique, March 11, 2017 Despite all the hardship and harsh treatment, many still held the notion that Britain is the parent country and it is to be loved and monarchy respected thus they could not cut ties with Britain, as many were made to believe. The Americans were divided among themselves in their opinions and the majority believed strongly that they won’t survive if they decided to break ties with Great Britain, but contrary to their opinion, the pamphlet came as an eye-opener and shade light. Thomas showed them that being defendant on England had more harm than good and reassured them that the United States had its own resources capable of standing on its own. By making the argument that United States had myriad advantages than the injuries they would sustain if they continued being connected to England, helped to convince the neutral mind that fighting for independence was the only right path left to take. This pamphlet dubbed as ‘common sense’ will go down in history as the most influential book which inspired many to choose the path which is dreaded in order to attain a better tomorrow.
