The technological advancement of Smartphone resulted in numerous advantages
associated with the use of the technology. However, such technological advantages have various
drawbacks that in most cases are unintentional. One the disadvantages associated with the use of
Smartphone is the social gap that has resulted from the use of Smartphone. As identified
by Enchanted Objects by David Rose, we all contain filter bubble and although these bubbles are
unique, there are common elements among the bubbles associated with the various shared
experiences. Our relationships with other people are as a result of our filter bubbles. This overlap
and the associated relationships are indicated in the Venn diagram below.

As our relationship with other people strengthens, the overlap space increases and we are able to
share memories as well as share our feelings. The sharing is essential as Anais in the article
states “This sharing strengthens our relationships, but it takes work.”
Smartphone is, however, changing this connection as it pulls us away from this social
setting and captures our minds drawing us from our social setting. The more spend time on the
Smartphone, the lesser time there is for social interaction and as a result, the overlap in the Venn
diagram begin to drift as people are no longer able to share their feelings as they are fully focused

on their Smartphone. At the same time, as Smartphone is used more for connection, it eliminates
the use of non-verbal communication cues that enable us to get to know the other people more
and deepen the Venn diagram overlap. A delay in message response also further drifts this overlap
as people tend to start to make non-existential inferences to justify the delay. Thus, as we spend
more time on the Smartphone, it denies us the opportunity to have a real connection with the
people actually in our life. Smartphone also increases the level of loneliness. Anias in the article
says, “A recent study even found that 20% of young adults report using their Smartphone during
sex. That this is coinciding with a rise in loneliness, especially in young people, cannot be
coincidental.” The introduction of screen only threatens to worsen this filter bubble issue.
