HISTORY OF OLD ENGLISH AND MDDLE ENGLISH

The English language has evolved over the centuries to become what it is now, the
late modern English. The English language was first used by the Anglo-Saxons in early 400s
after the re-establishment of the Britons and the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons into the
country who settled in the eastern parts of the country in the middle 400s. Five kingdoms
were created as a result of the invasion. Additionally, the English language became a blend of
many languages since there was a blend of West Germanic tribe language found in AngloSaxon. As the language evolved, there could still be traces of German dialect found in the
Middle English also sounded similar to Modern English (Finegan, 1989).
The Old English which had been brought by the Anglo-Saxon settlers after their
invasion in Great Britain has been to be the form of the original English Language. However,
before the settlement of the Anglo-Saxon, the British communicated with each through Celtic
languages. And due to the Roman rule in Britain, Latin was also used by the government as
well as used for military use. In addition, it was extensively used among the upper class
society, important functions and was also adopted in urban areas.

Roman rule to Anglo-Saxon rule, who had originated from the northern Germany. The
territory later came be to be identified as England. The Old English was spoken before
1100AD. Due to the influx of German population that led the invaders to the encroachment
of the territories that they found nearby, they managed to colonize the territory with the
exclusion of remote areas which remained Britain strongholds (Baker, 2012).

languages. The Anglo-Saxon influenced prevailed over time as with their power and a new
language emerged which was referred as “Englisc” which is nowadays referred to as AngloSaxon or Old English and certain cases, Anglo-Frisian (Campbell, 1959).
Over time, the language though not that separate to the German dialect, went through
a development which provided it with unique features that were different from the German
languages. The development occurred due to the isolation of the Old English from the
German languages. There was an emergence of four major dialects in some of the regions in
Mercia, West-Saxon, Northumbrian, and Kentish. The differences in the language could be
