Narrating A Gathering of Old Men Ernest Gaines chooses to narrate the novel, A Gathering of Old Men, in a somewhat unorthodox way. He tells the story of a group of old, black men and their attempt to stand up to racism in the late 1970s, but he tells each portion of the story through the eyes of different characters. This constant switching of point of view affects the way the novel develops and the way a reader comprehends the novel. The first purpose of using multiple narrators is for the reader to understand each character through his or her own words, instead of through the second hand perspective of a single narrative voice.By switching the narrator constantly throughout the novel, Gaines gives readers a unique perspective on the events of the book. The story is told in first person point of view, but after switching narrators, the reader understands how each of the speaking characters feels about the events of this novel. In Rooster's chapter, the reader learns how this particular old man feels about his stand. Rooster is very proud of himself for standing up. This is clearly shown when he thinks to himself, "I looked up at him, holding my gun tight to my side and feeling proud" (Gaines 181). This gives one a firsthand perspective on this particular moment, but not everybody's perspective is the same. In the next section of the novel, the reader will be given another old man’s unique perspective and his thoughts. Some of these perspectives provide important information on the events at hand, some offer insight and details from the past that are essential to the novel's plot. No matter what information is provided, the reader understands the Beau’s murder and the old men’s stand from multiple points of view.
