Intercultural communication
Intercultural communication is defined as the communication process that takes place
between people of different cultural origins (Camara, Sakile, and Orbe, 2010). It plays a major
role in social sciences like anthropology, linguistics and communication studies because it is all
about the way in which people perceive and understand other people’s culture and languages in
order to know how well to interact with them. The cultural differences between the people are
often large enough to impact the relay of messages and information between them. Selfawareness in communication is a very critical aspect because it brings light to one’s motivations,
beliefs, culture, and faith among other characteristics that enable us to interpret and frame
messages through the noise and filters which are our being and thoughts. It, therefore, becomes
easier to tell if a decision made or something said during communication is objective or
subjective. This is because as humans from different cultures and backgrounds, we all have our
biases, stereotypes, and prejudices. There have been studies on intercultural communication over
the years and several theorists have made an impact on the definition of intercultural
communication like Herbert Spencer, Richard.D. Lewis, Jakob Lauring and Mark Orbe (Camara,
Sakile, and Orbe, 2010).
