The Democratic National Convention fell victim to the hacking in 2016 of its email account
during the times leading to the United States Presidential Elections. The DNC is inclusive of a
string of conventions that have been held every four years, since 1832 for the sake of the United
States Democratic Party. In short, these conventions have been active every election year.
The purpose of the Democratic National Convention is to assist with the unification of the
party, the nominations and assertion of both the candidates to run for the Presidential and Vice
Presidential seats in the national elections. The delegates in attendance, both pledged and
unpledged, take part in the decision making of who is to become the party’s Presidential
candidate. These nominations and assertions constitute the primary elections which then lead to
the general elections being held, since there is a candidate representing the party at the ballot
box.
The hackers who were involved in the cyber crime during the U.S Presidential elections
hailed from Russia (Nance, 2016). They are thought to have distorted the election system at the
time since it made some of the voters change their minds on whom they were going to vote for as
a result of leakage of information through a site used for the publishing of confidential
information from secretive sources. These hackers were two Russian Intelligence groups,
namely, Fancy Bear (APT28) and Cozy Bear (APT29).
The Russian hackers carried out the hacking through accessing the servers of the campaigns
of the Democrat candidate, Hillary Clinton. Accessing the servers meant they had access to the
emails of the Democratic Party candidate campaigns. Unfortunately, one malicious mail found
its way to the account of these campaigns and the campaign chairman happened to click on it
which then led to the release of the thousands of the emails on the Clinton campaign. With this

hack, Wikileaks was able to get its hands on the emails which were then published for the sole
reason of printing a bad image of the Democrat Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, which
was the drive force behind the hacks anyway.
The hacking of the Clinton campaign took place in 2016. It began around May of 2016,
