A new company is starting with one headquarters and three branch offices. The company needs to build its network infrastructure from the ground up.
The head office will have around 150 employees each with their own workstation. Each of the branch offices will have around 70 or so employees, also with their own workstation. Every office will have 8 to 12 servers and a storage area network. All offices would need to be connected to each other over the WAN, and the connections need to be HA (highly available).
1- How would you segment the LAN and each office? Describe the reasoning for this segmentation and the purpose of each VLAN you use.
2- Describe the internal network used in all the offices from a layer 1 (physical) and layer 2 (data link) perspective. What type of media will be used? What protocols? And what equipment will be required only for the Internal network.
3- Develop an IP addressing scheme for each office and its VLANs. Describe how will the offices connect to each other, what protocols will be used, and how inter-office routing will take place. Describe how high-availability and fail-over will work with a few examples.
4- Create a BoQ table of all the items that will need to be procured for this network and provide rough budgetary figures to be shared with the procurement department.
5- After everything is built, only 1 network administrator is available to manage the entire network. What are the routine tasks he needs to perform on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis and how will he manage everything remotely?
6- Using Microsoft Visio, SmartDraw, or a similar program, create a detailed diagram of the network you have designed and planned, with as much detail as you can provide.
