INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

2

Intercultural communication is the process whereby information and messages are passed
from one culture to the other while culture, on the other hand, means a history of beliefs, rules,
and regulations that form a norm of doing things in a certain society where these norms are
passed on from generation to generation (Koester and Lustig, 2015). In recent times, people are
becoming diversified in the sense that exploration of other cultures remains relevant and
important globally mainly in the need to keep peace with each other. Since all cultures are
different in their own way, a person who is able to interact with these diverse systems creates a
good leader. There are many theories that cover this type of communication also aligned with
issues rather obstacles and challenges. Also, it carries some benefits to the people who exercise it
and also globally (Koester and Lustig, 2015).
Intercultural communication holds several benefits both to the interacting cultures and
globe at large. First, the interactive cultures usually bring about a collective understanding for the
benefit of all the involved parties and not for individuals only resulting to a healthy community.
Second, this type of interaction brings about economic benefits to the different cultures involved,
that is, increased commerce between them. Mostly, they interact to take part in trading ventures.
Third, there are reduced conflicts between them. Interacting forms a strong bond between them
which results in understanding and consideration of each other. In this case, conflicts are reduced
where they can collectively work to make themselves better in other cultural aspects. Also,
individually, this communication and interaction result in personal growth which comes about
through tolerance that is harbored between the interacting cultures (Logan, Steel, and Hunt,
2015).
Along inter-cultural communication, there are some assumptions that must or are
considered to hold this type of social science. These are the Einsteinian, Newtonian, and

Quantum mechanics scientific paradigms which further extend their application into social
science through relativism, positivism, and constructivism (Neuliep, 2014). The Newtonian
paradigm assumes that with enough knowledge one can easily control and predict the present and
the future natures of a certain society, an assumption called linear causality. It assumes that any
person who may harbor some interest on a certain issue facing a society or the society at large,
and continuously remains objective on it, they all would see the same thing. The objectivity of
the matter must not result from subjectivity and prejudice but from an outside view of the
society. In the positivist paradigm, an assumption is made that for one to be competent and fit
well in a certain culture, they must be very observant of one or few character(s) that the culture
upholds. The observer must be careful to uphold the norms, the dos and the don’ts and in this
case, observes a culture as being fixed as opposed to dynamism. The Einsteinian paradigm also
known as the relativist paradigm, observes culture as being a self-governed set of systems but to
a certain degree where other forces may take further control and understand these set of systems
which leads to understanding the culture, leads to a successful identification and learning of the
roles of behavior in it which enable one to perfectly fit in that culture. This assumption can be
imagined as two entirely different circles where creative and objective preparation in one will
help to jump and fit in the other circle. In the constructivism or Quantum mechanics paradigm,
the party involved, constructivist, creatively observes the boundaries of say two different cultures
which form a relevant way in forming another third culture that uses the perspectives of the other
cultures. This involves bridging of different cultures and creating a meaningful interaction
between them (Neuliep, 2014).
These scientific paradigms all hold their pros and cons which are very important to
observe. Comparing the relativism paradigm with the constructivist one, relativism only

observes/identifies the difference in certain culture with no interlinking them or a way to dissolve
these differences and form one concrete issue as compared to the constructivist one. The
positivist approach tends to observe the cultural practices as being universal while on the other
side relativism appreciates the diversity and differences in the cultures. Positivism assumes that
at some point, all the global cultures will finally converge to one cultural entity while relativism
holds that this is not possible. Constructivism, on the other hand, issues an approach that cultures
flow between certain contexts under collective, keen and creating emphasis individually and
organizationally by creating the third set of culture contexts. Context refers to the setting
situation and circumstances under which the communication takes place which can be divided
into physical context where people interact face to face, social context where a person may
interact with their friend or other persons and psychological context that covers the thoughts that
are harbored in one’s mind over the other party/friend (Carbaugh, 2015).
According to Samovar, et. al (2014), intercultural communication being an inclusion of
different and diverse people and their cultures faces a string of issues affecting it. Ther...
