Rationale of Research
Raspberry pi it’s a credit size microcomputer used in performing many tasks that the
computer does. My passion was geared after learning the number of tasks the raspberry could
perform. Some of the tasks include; raspberry pi can do word processing, spreadsheets, media
streamers, tablet computer, internet radio, arcade machine and in more complex situations where
it is used in hunting for meteorites and cosmic computers. After realizing what a single raspberry
pi could perform I got encouraged to learn about it because this hardware could further my career
line and industry too. Through my research, I discovered that raspberry pi has several advantages
over the old computers we use. This could be supported certain factors like power consumption.
Pi uses around five watts of electricity which cannot be compared by what the whole server can
consume in a day since it runs day and night. From this perspective, it shows that pi is cost
effective. Since pi uses an SD card, therefore it does not require fans to cool it because they are
of good quality. The interests of learning this small hardware increased after realizing it is also
used in the TV technology through LCDs through the built-in HDMI capabilities which handle
resolution up to 1920 by 1200 enabling it to play video player box. Raspberry pi technology is a
new thing in a market where its application in the future and outcomes will be overwhelming.
This is one of the reasons I was interested in researching about this new technology and industry
and even the pi can be integrated to a surveillance camera system (Maksimovic, M. (2014, May).
Research Question
How can Raspberry pi be created effectively for a security system in surveillance and be
interfaced with a detector and pi camera?

Challenges and Victories in the Research
Since the research involved software and devices, there was a major problem in financing
the proposal. For a proposal to be valid I had to use some devices which I would buy from
electronic shops. After buying the devices, some of the electronic shops I bought vague devices
and after trying they end up disappointing the research. Another problem was convincing the
professors that it can work. They were too rigid to change and adapt to new technology research
because I did not want to make a usual proposal but instead a proposal which could help me in
the near future. While conducting the research, many people did not understand what raspberry
pi, therefore, many of my respondents and potential donors were shying away because they could
not imagine a small device carrying all the functions mandated to perform. This proposal needs
flexible professors who collaborate. Some of the victories in the research are that I found
Professor who was the Dean of our school who assisted with all the relevant support I needed.
The professor introduced me to the Principal who helped me financially and offered a room
where I would carry any relevant experiment. Since the principal was an IT by profession, he
helped me assemble the prototypes, tools of implementation and tested whether the information
gathered was correct. After doing all these, we created the device by coding python language and
tested whether it was up to requirement. We also fixed an infrared distance sensor instead of a
light sensor to help the surveillance camera to be more robust and accommodate different types
of devices and be efficiently used in the CCTV industry (Goyal, L. (2014, February

Research
From the research I was conducting, video surveillance has established its importance
and benefits in supervising of assets, people, and environment. Therefore, this proposal deals
with an approach of an embedded real-time surveillance system using the raspberry pi
technology to detect anything malicious for our own protection. The proposal needs to learn how
the cameras can be integrated and raspberry pi can be used to operate and control video cameras
for sensing and surveillance, record videos, and future playbacks. This proposal ends in a
research of monitoring a certain area controlled by cameras using the raspberry pi technology.
