For US Job Creation, Renewables are a Better Bet than Coal.
http://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/energy/renewables/for-us-jobs-creation-renewables-are-a-betterbet-than-coal
Summary of news story
•
•
The Trump administration is looking to revert the environmental regulations and allow for the
exploitation of resources for oil, gas, and coal
At the same time, the solar energy sector has increasingly grown, and the solar energy industry
now employs a significant portion of US workers. The article reviews some of the paybacks of
solar energy to job creation and reviews the manner, in which the renewable energy may not
only benefit the US but has also been implemented in other countries such as Germany.
Opportunities that can be associated with Solar Energy
•
•
•
Solar energy is known for its convenience in terms of easy availability and the ease with which
an individual can harness the energy for use within their houses and at workplaces.
Furthermore, the increasing prices of other sources of energy suggest that individuals or entities
that can harness alternative sources of energy may become entrepreneurs.
With increasing popularity of environmentally-sound practices, the role of renewable
alternatives for energy in the market is a supposition that the renewable forms are a trend.
The Impact of Disregarding Environmental Policies
•
•
With Trump rekindling the exploitation of natural resources to create nonrenewable ones, the
environmental concerns may have deviated to industrial concerns.
Future implications of the wind and solar energy have been significantly cheap but serve
individuals for a longer period. It would, therefore, mean that the enterprises selling and
repairing solar energy panels may decline after most of its products are no longer a requirement
to the consumer market.
Further reflections
•
•
Other forms of renewable energy including wind energy are suitable resources for cheap energy
which consumers able to afford, unlike fossil fuels.
The increased concern by the Trump administration on the fossil fuels such as oil might
encourage lucrative corporations also to focus on oil and gas. The focus on these items might
deviate public attention from the hassles of using transforming solar and wind energy for use.
These Paper Drones Are Built for One-Way Missions
https://www.technologyreview.com/s/603552/these-paper-drones-are-built-for-one-way-missions/
Summary of news story
•
•
In the contemporary world, drones have been used in performing various tasks. There have
been significant efforts to replace human intelligence with robotic technologies. However,
engineers have gone a step further in the design of drones.
Inventors have come up with one-way mission drones that are intended to deliver goods to the
rather inaccessible places. Therefore, this article describes the design of DARPA drones that are
programmed to airdrop goods, such as medicine, food, and communication devices into conflict
zones or other dangerous areas.
Technical engineering and business opportunities
•
•
Computer hardware-software, electromechanical, civil, aeronautics, and system engineers to
make these disposable drones efficient, less subject to interference, move faster and perform
desired operations efficiently
These cheap, disposable drones can be used in the commercial deliveries of various goods by
vendors to their respective clients. Although effective, this technology may render ground-based
parcel delivery incompetent, thus, disrupting its operations
Possible side effects of the technology
•
•
The affordability of these disposable drones may lead to the proliferation of many drones in the
airspace, thus, increasing the risks of collisions.
Although these disposable drones have a larger payload for the delivery of vital commodities
such as food and medicines, they can be used by gangs and terrorists to drop bombs and other
weapons, hence, amplifying security threats.
Further reflections
•
According to DARPA’s engineers, they intend to design drones that have the potential to vanish
into thin air after completing a mission. Although important, this feature may enhance the
anonymity of terrorism activities. Terrorists can use such drones to drop bombs and weapons.
Since the drone vanishes after the mission, security agencies may have hard times collecting
substantial evidence regarding such an attack.
Forget Autonomous Cars – Autonomous Ships Are Almost Here
http://spectrum.ieee.org/transportation/marine/forget-autonomous-cars-autonomous-ships-arealmost-here
Summary of news story
•
•
It has become evident that the invention of autonomous ships is not far away from reality.
Technology is evolving faster than expected and engineers are working towards improving the
existing facilities. The invention of autonomous cars was the landmark for other robotic
automobiles
This news article explores an emerging technology of robotic ships, although several years off its
implementation. As most engineers argue, scientists are working towards building remotely
controlled ships. These digitally connected ships will harbor numerous advantages compared to
the manual ones.
Technical engineering and business opportunities this story brings to mind
•
•
•
Engineers, such as mechanical, automotive, civil, electromechanical, telecommunication,
electronic, and computer hardware-software, have an opportunity in this field of invention.
Due to the safety of autonomous ships, cargo shipping entrepreneurs have an opportunity of
investing in them.
These ships have the potential to reduce risks associated with piracy and facilitate the safety of
goods carried by these autonomous ships
Possible negative impacts of the technology
•
•
Since human intelligence in the operation of vessels is likely to be replaced by robots and
computers, there is a likelihood of pilots and other crew members losing jobs
In the case of a system failure at the middle of the sea, it could be difficult and costly for
engineers to rectify the problem
Further reflections
•
Autonomous ships are likely to be fully functioning in the next seven years. Although the design
of these ships allows more space for cargo, any water accidents including collisions may become
costly and result in massive losses. Besides, any eminent failure in communication and operation
of the autonomous ship may pose significant challenges to engineers
Pu-238: Fuel for Deep Space Journey
http://insights.globalspec.com/article/4105/pu-238-fuel-for-deep-space-journeys
Summary of news story
•
•
•
The production of fuel for deep space journeys has not been possible in the United States since
the Cold War-era. As a result, America has been importing fuel, particularly plutonium-238, to
power its space missions from Russia until 2010.
However, the U.S. space agency NASA has taken key steps towards resuming its full-scale
production of the critical plutonium-238, a radioactive isotope used for the production of
nuclear energy through a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator.
Therefore, the news article reviews some of the essential steps that the U.S. space agency has
taken in order to make the production of Pu-238 a success. In addition, some of the
contemporary challenges are also explored in the article.
Opportunities that can be associated with the production of Pu-238
•
•
•
•
The production of Pu-238 within America can significantly reduce costs related to its
importation as well as curb eminent shortages of the space fuel
There is a possibility of using the excess Pu-238 in nuclear reactors to produce nuclear energy
for domestic use
Since Pu-238 is a maintenance-free power, NASA has the potential to cut its maintenance costs
significantly
Technical engineers have a great opportunity of being part of the project
Possible side effects of the development
•
•
The production the radioactive isotope is a dangerous affair and may increase the risks of the
occurrence of nuclear accidents. Although NASA has confirmed that there are adequate facilities
as well as appropriate security measures, the production of the fuel is dangerous and its health
impacts costly.
The addition of nuclear power systems makes space exploration a costly
Further reflection
•
Although Pu-238 is not directly involved in the production of nuclear weapons, there are
concerns from the international community regarding its manufacture. It is essential to
understand that the production of plutonium-238 starts with the reaction of neptunium-237, a
component of nuclear weapons.
The 2,578 Problems with Self-Driving Cars
http://spectrum.ieee.org/cars-that-think/transportation/self-driving/the-2578-problems-with-selfdriving-cars
Summary of news story
•
•
Self-driving cars are a still very much in the testing phase, as a large amount of self-driving cars
have a “disengagement,” or an error when a human safety driver should take control of the car.
The regulations from the State of California are very loosely structured and it can lead to data
misrepresentation.
Technical engineering and business opportunities
•
•
With issues still arriving in self-driving vehicles there is a lot of business opportunity for the
company who can master this new technology it first.
There is endless possibility on the engineering side too, as you have some of the biggest
technology companies like Google, Telsa, BWM, Ford and Bosch are all fighting for the best
talent they can find.
Possible side effects and related developments
•
•
Self-driving cars unfortunately are little ways away from being used on public roads, but one
side effect of is the lack of regulation in reporting data as each company has the right to each
deem what is a “disengagement” so can change their data as they want.
A related development could be the loss of a certain industry, the taxi driver, this would happen
years and years down the road but self-driving cars could change that industry forever.
Further reflections
•
•
•
According to the California DMV an autonomous car makes a mistake every 3 hours, as I can see
this be a scary statistic, I feel that we are very close to perfecting this technology very soon.
I feel that driver-less car will most effective is small local areas instead of long distance trips.
The future for driverless cars is very bright and has the potentiate to create another billiondollar industry sooner than later.
More Money, More Problems for the Commercial Space Launch Biz
https://www.wired.com/2017/02/launching-rockets-business-hence-explosions-layoffs/
Summary of news story
•
•
•
For both United Launch Alliance, and Space X the two largest commercial space launch
companies have both laid off number of workers.
It is hard to turn a profit in commercial space travel until there is a demand.
Each of the companies must find a way to keep their high-end clientele and contracts while
making a profit.
Technical engineering and business opportunities
•
•
•
These two companies are important in part because they’re both government contractors.
Both Space X and United Launch Alliance are competitors fighting to get the biggest chunks of a
relatively small market.
For the company who can get to space, return safely and make it profitable first will be very,
very successful and will pioneer a new industry for years to come.
Possible side effects and related developments
•
•
•
Those developments demonstrate how each company is racing to turn a profit sending payloads
into space.
Commercial rocket launching is just like any other business; you have to cut costs and maximize
profits, and when that happens sometimes corners are cut.
Another possible side-affect could be a new technology advancements in airplane and drones’
designs.
Further reflections
•
•
I believe that cost is the thing that influences how large the space-launching market will
become. You can’t have an active asteroid mining business if it’s too costly to carry mining
equipment to space.
I feel in the long run that there will only be room for one of these commercial spaces launching
companies, which is pretty sad because both are working on ground breaking technology.
Solar Installations Soared in the U.S. in 2016.
https://www.technologyreview.com/s/603664/solar-installations-soared-in-the-us-in2016/?set=603665
Summary of news story
•
•
•
A report by Solar Energy Industries Association indicates that 14,626 megawatts worth of
photovoltaic installations went up in 2016.
New report written by Bloomberg New Energy Finance for the Business Council for Sustainable
Energy, an industry group, shows that solar accounts for much of the growth in low-carbon
energy production over the past few years.
New wind capacity arrived in the same quantity in 2016 as it did in 2015.
Opportunities that can be associated with Solar Energy
•
•
•
With increasing level of popularity of environmentally-sound methods, the role of alternative
options for energy on the market is a supposition that the green varieties are a style.
Solar energy is well known because of its convenience in conditions of easy availableness and
the efficiency with which a person might harness the vitality for used in their houses with
workplaces.
Furthermore, the increasing prices of other resources of energy claim that individuals or entities
that can harness alternative resources of energy could become entrepreneurs.
The Impact of Disregarding Environmental Policies
•
•
As trumps policy toward renewable energy so a period of doom in the solar and wind energy .it
should be noted that the current millstone on solar energy of raising production from 26
gigawatts to 123 gigawatts. Will play a big role in ensuring survival of the industry
Future implications of the wind and solar energy have been significantly cheap but serve
individuals for a longer period. It would, therefore, mean that the enterprises selling and
repairing solar energy panels may decline after most of its products are no longer a requirement
to the consumer market.
Further reflections
•
•
A fall back in the young and fast growing industry of renewable energy should be avoided. This is
because corporation might shift focus to the lucrative oil and gas industry.
Trumps administration should be keen on policy review to avoid fallout.
FUTURE SHIP POWERING OPTIONS- Exploring alternative methods of ship
propulsion
http://www.raeng.org.uk/publications/reports/future-ship-powering-options
Summary of news story
•
•
•
•
•
For existing ships, reciprocating motors with exhaust gas attenuation technology are the main
option as well as fuels that produce fewer CO2 emissions.
LNG is one particular fuel and, with various other alternatives collectively, would require a
satisfactory bunkering system to be developed, for profound sea voyages specifically.
For new complexes designed in the near-term, the circumstance is broadly similar but with the
choice to include cross types propulsion systems depending on dispatch size and supposed use.
In the case of ships to be built in the medium- to long-term, further propulsion options include
alternative fuel options, fuel cells, batteries and nuclear.
The past methods await scientific development but nuclear, while well comprehended
technically, would require a major change to ship owning and procedure infrastructure.
Technical engineering and business opportunities
•
•
•
There is plenty of opportunities for engineers in mechanical, electrical and marine .design and
innovation is greatly required for the project success.
Insurance firms and entrepreneurs in the marine transport industries have a field green with
opportunities.
These ships have the potential to reduce carbon emission and safe for long travels e.g. military
ship
Possible negative impacts of the technology
•
•
•
Marine accidents of nuclear powered ships might be very disastrous for both crew members and
marine life
Some technologies are very expensive. This will result to an increase in cost of marine transport
although the project if viable for long term benefit.
Insurance cost of this ship might be way too high, most marine insurance firms might not be
ready to insure them.
Further reflections
•
Engineers are up to the challenge to bring to life new methods of ship propagation. This not
withstands the fact that autonomous ships are being developed for commercial application. If
well approached there is will be imminent drop in marine emission.
Built for living: Understanding behavior and the built environment through
engineering and design
http://www.raeng.org.uk/RAE/media/Publications/Reports/built-for-living-understanding-behaviour.pdf
Summary of news story
The built for life workshop were scheduled in line with UK government and DCLG desire to capture with
a better understanding issues relating to behavioral issues in the building industry. There is a spectrum
of learning activities relating to social technical issues in the building industry. The workshop covered
the following themes:
•
•
•
Resource utilization i.e. water, energy, space management and waste management.
Safety, health and wellbeing of the users
Capacity building, performance and productivity in the industry.
Technical engineering and business opportunities
•
•
•
There is a big gap in provision of quality residential and office space; to the real estate
developers this will prove to be a gold mine.
To civil electrical, energy, mechanical and architects there is a lot to learn and opportunities to
explore.
There is a lot of lessons learnt by the UK government, the supply chain managers, and the entire
support industries in building and construction
Possible negative impacts of the technology
•
•
•
•
Over crowing of cities
Increase challenges of waste management.
Energy and resource wastage
Unpredictability of neighborhoods.
Further reflections
•
Information that gives relationship between design and human behavior is vital for sustainable
design. A sharing platform for all stakeholders and support industries will ensure it achieved.
The workshop findings should be shared across board to satisfy the themes for which it was
meant.
Extreme space weather: impacts on engineered systems and infrastructure
http://www.raeng.org.uk/publications/reports/space-weather-summary-report
Summary of news story
•
•
•
•
Due to the multiplicity of dish, designs used today there is certainly considerable doubt in the
entire behavior of the fleet but experience from more humble storms indicates an amount of
disruption to dish services must be predicted.
The best anatomist judgement, predicated on the 2003 surprise, is the fact that up to 10% of
satellites could experience non-permanent outages lasting time to days therefore of the
extreme event, but it is improbable these outages will be multiply evenly over the fleet since
some satellite the designs and constellations would undoubtedly prove more prone than others.
The significant cumulative rays’ doses would be likely to cause speedy ageing of several
satellites.
After an extreme surprise, all satellite TV owners and providers should carefully measure the
need for alternative satellites to be launched sooner than planned to be able to mitigate the
chance of early failures.
Technical engineering and business opportunities
•
•
Weather station, meteorological department and space engineering is a booming career
opportunities for all engineering disciplines.
The ability to predict calamities through satellite technologies is of much use to insurance
industries
Possible negative impacts of the technology
•
HF communications may very well be rendered inoperable for many days throughout a solar
super storm
• high exposure to radiation for air plane passengers and crew members of between 1msv and
20msv
• poor communication services from L-band (~1.5GHz) satellite for three days at a time of supper
storms
Further reflections
•
An overall federal government UK weather table should be initiated. capacity building is vital to
maintaining the weather station table that is coordinate across board .by all agencies. Research
departments and the physical engineering sciences research council should spear head these
activities. A council for environmental and space research should be formed.
Food Waste as Material for Rubber Tires
http://insights.globalspec.com/article/4360/food-waste-as-material-for-rubber-tires
Summary of news story
•
•
Traditionally, the main rubber filler material is carbon black. That’s why nearly all automobile
tires are black. Carbon black is petroleum based making rubber prices dependent of petroleum
costs.
Researchers have discovered that, carbon black can be partially replaced with food waste to
produce more desirable rubber in terms of performance and flexibility. This article, therefore,
analyses the payback of using food waste as a partial filler material in rubber industry.
Opportunities that can be associated with the use of food waste fillers
•
•
•
•
Automotive, food processing and civil works departments have a massive opportunity to invest
on this project.
The use of food waste will reduce American dependency on imported petroleum and reduce the
dependency of the rubber product’s prices on petroleum costs.
With increasing concerns on the environmental degradation, this project comes at hand. Food
waste will be sourced directly from waste landfills hence reducing their volumes.
According to the tests, the new fillers surpass the standard performance opening doors for new
applications of rubber. Tomatoes fibers and eggshells fillers results in stronger, more flexible
and greater performance rubber. This makes resulting rubber more suitable for various
entrepreneurs.
Possible side effects and related developments
•
•
Food waste doesn’t completely replace the use carbon black, this cause a dilemma to
entrepreneurs on whether to invest on the project on not.
Availability of food waste can be a simple task for experimental lab productions but on large
scale industrial basis, food waste availability can be very challenging.
Further reflections
•
•
•
Biochemical experts should further the efforts towards realization of sustainable rubber filler
materials.
I think the use of these fillers can lower manufacturing costs and produce novel materials by
utilizing wastes from other industries.
I believe there is a leeway to fully phase out the use of carbon black; in that case, rubber
products will be environmentally friendly.
Boston Dynamics Officially Unveils Its Wheel-Leg Robot
http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/humanoids/boston-dynamics-handle-robot.
Summary of news story
•
•
A large number of the unique capacities that robots have originated from their mobility.
Accomplishing the mobility required is however once in a while managed without difficulty. But
the landscape over which robots must have the capacity to move is often uneven, sloppy, which
offers rise to numerous challenges, particularity steadiness at motion. Two of the most wellknown techniques for robot mobility are wheels and legs.
Introduction of wheel-leg robots is an ideal break-through in robotics industry. It helps increase
the efficiency of the robot has it can adapt various terrain conditions with adequate stability as
well as attaining high speeds at favorable terrain conditions.
Opportunities that can be associated with the Wheel-Leg Robot
•
•
•
Aeronautics, Computer-software, civil, electromechanical, and system engineers to make these
wheel-leg robots efficient, less subject to terrain limitations, move faster and perform desired
operations efficiently
With increasing popularity of robotics, the role of self-driven robots in the market is a supposition
that the wheel-leg robots are a trend.
A combination of wheel-leg robot and artificial intelligence will eliminate the engagement of
individuals on battle fields.
Possible side effects and related developments
•
•
With the looming high rates of unemployment, introduction of wheel-leg robots eliminates
possible employments on manual labors with little decision making hence accelerating the
unemployment rates.
Operations of wheel-leg robots involve great wear outs and damages, running programs as well
should be kept up to date. The maintenance, repair and upgrading costs tend to raise the cost of
adopting this innovation making it less viable.
Further reflections
•
•
According to Boston dynamics, wheel-leg robots employ unique stability software compared to
its predecessors, I see this as a looming difficulty by itself as this dynamic in software require
continuous training of robot users.
I feel the wheel-leg hybrid system can have massive transformation in military engineering
Why the Automotive Future Will Be Dominated by Fuel Cells?
http://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/fuel-cells/why-the-automotive-future-will-be-dominated-by-fuelcells
Summary of news story
•
Considering the refueling time, adaptability and range of hydrogen fuel cells, the future of
automotive vehicles is directed to the use of these fuel cells for greater efficiency.
Technical engineering and business opportunities this story brings to mind
•
•
Electromechanical and mechanical engineering to make vehicles more efficient faster and
durable with less interference from the use of fossil fuels.
Mechanical, Systems and hardware-software engineering directed to making efficiency a part of
the future for all users and vehicle manufacturers.
Possible side effects and related developments
•
•
•
There will be a remarkable shift in the transportation industry to electrically powered vehicles.
The shift will benefit the country by reducing the carbon print by reducing the emission of the
pollutants that reduce the local air quality, in addition, it helps to reduce the effects that alter
the climate.
It helps improve national security. Countries that lack petroleum fuels are politically and
economically disadvantaged. The use of fuel cells helps the countries address the problem.
The use of fuel cell technology helps to manage the problem of the potential loss of exploitable
sources of petroleum. It decreases the reliance of man on petroleum products that will reduce
in the near future.
Further Reflections
•
•
•
The process of electrolysis in the hydrogen fuel cell technology squanders energy and reduces
the efficient of the resource making it inefficient in its operation.
The infrastructure to encourage the use of FCEV as a primary means of transport is the lack of
fueling infrastructure that provides hydrogen, the safety of hydrogen as a fossil fuel and the
non-renewable nature of the fuel.
The comprehensive changes in the transportation infrastructure have a high cost of setting up
and the convenience and capacity to meet the demands of the grid.
Artificial Intelligence Is Not a Threat—Yet
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/artificial-intelligence-is-not-a-threat-mdash-yet/
Summary of news story
•
Artificial Intelligence is not an existential threat now. However, the gradual development in the
upcoming years calls for the development of fail-safe systems to manage any potential problem.
Technical engineering and business opportunities this story brings to mind
•
•
•
Hardware –software and systems engineering- to make systems more human-like and intelligent
to understand human language.
Systems, hardware, electrical and mechanical hardware-software engineering- to make systems
more independent and intelligent by building a human equivalent.
Mechanical engineering- to streamline manufacturing processes by creating robots that help
streamlines the manufacturing processes.
Possible side effects and related developments
•
•
•
•
Developing Artificial Intelligence, in an attempt to build a human equivalent, will begin to
consume resources that will increase the risk of destruction and create a potential problem.
Development of artificial technology is slow paced to allow the building of checks such as the AI
off switch to safeguard against any AI takeover.
The development of AI creates a false analogy between natural and artificial intelligence. Based
on alpha-male psychology on the concept of intelligence fails to accommodate that AI will
develop along female lines to have the capacity to solve problems and have no desire of
destruction.
The development of AI will be along the lines of a reward system that involves the use of reward
and punishment.
Further reflections
•
•
•
The gradual development of Artificial Intelligence creates a potential risk that requires the
development of technology that will not eventually disobey its masters.
The development of the AI technology will be not based on a gendered view that men will fight
the system and women remain obedient. In view of this, the AI will not be a human equivalent
but a human subordinate.
The dystopia future with artificial intelligence is a manifestation of human fear of intelligent
systems.
Analyzing the Impact of an
Engineering Concept, Development, Project, or Trend
Pretend that you work as a consulting engineer for a multidisciplinary “think tank” (such as
RAND Corporation) that applies analytical techniques to a wide range of social, economic,
governmental, military, and other problems.
To anticipate possible topics for future consulting contracts, professional members of your firm
routinely monitor current events —including emerging engineering concepts, developments,
projects, and trends. As one of the consulting professionals, you are expected to periodically
write and file a concise (800–1,200 words) summary report on the potential impacts of a new
engineering-related concept, development, project, or trend.
Example: Based on the example news story we used for the current events journal, a focused
potential-consulting summary report could be addressed to many different topics. Here are some:
•
•
•
•
•
Commercial opportunities that would be generated if a NASCAR-type spectator sport of drone
racing becomes popular
Regulatory issues in spectator protection at drone racing events
Technical imperatives for improved collision-prevention methods if commercial drone racing is
to be feasible
Predictable “arms race” developments in drone racing and possible resultant threats to manned
aircraft
Law enforcement and national security threats posed by increasingly powerful small and
medium-size drones
Each such report is circulated to marketing specialists in the company who seek out new
consulting opportunities.
REPORT CONTENT: For this assignment, review the current events articles you’ve submitted,
and pick one about an engineering or engineering-related development that seems likely to have
substantial impacts on society, social justice issues, the economy, the environment, global
climate change, etc. Then write the type of summary report just described.
Your report should identify not only possible general outcomes but also the specific kinds of
“stakeholders” who would likely gain or be threatened by each outcome. For example, the
growing use of rare earth minerals has been very profitable for mining companies and some high
tech companies, but devastating for residents and the environment in the poorly regulated areas
where the mining takes place. The report would go into some detail about these impacts.
Unlike the brief comments in your current events journal, the content of this paper should be
based on your additional research into relevant facts and expert opinions. See how much you
can learn in 1 to 2 hours of serious searching and analysis.
REPORT STYLE: Style the report using businesslike, technically precise language. This is not
an essay or position paper. You’re trying to objectively outline for your consulting colleagues (a
professional audience) the dynamics of a situation on which your company might be asked at
consult. Since you’re doing only an hour or two of research, it would be inappropriate to write as
if you were presenting solidly researched facts and opinions of your own. On the other hand, if a
development has already generated impacts (social, social-justice, industrial, economic,
environmental, legal, etc.), do summarize findings and assessments already made by others.

As in your design document assignment, conclude this memo with an APA-style reference list.
The memo should include at least one parenthetic APA-style citation for each source in the
reference list. See our Hacker text and the course writing guide for guidance on APA sourcedocumentation style.
LENGTH & FORMAT: As in your design document and most technical writing, you should
mostly summarize or paraphrase your sources; if you do find it necessary to quote a source, be
sure to use quote marks (or equivalent block indention for a quote of 40 or more words).
Regardless of whether you quote, paraphrase, or summarize, remember to cite your
sources. Note that submissions for this assignment will be checked by SafeAssign, so you can
check SafeAssign’s “Originality Report” for possible accidental plagiarism.
Observe the specified word limit range: 800 to 1,200 words. Relevant graphics with source notes
are welcomed, but don’t consider them in the word count. Also don’t count the reference list as
part of the word count.
Format the report as a memo, using the following basic header format at the top of the first
page.
