UM Efficient Market Hypothesis Fundamental Pillars of Modern Finance Discussion
Respond to your classmates’ posts. Choose a student with the opposing position ( my position was strong-form efficiency). In your post to your classmate,
Explain a weakness in the support for the position they have explained “ the positions they explained is the semistrong-form”.
Identify an anomaly that contradicts their position.
Please see classmate’s post below.
“Semi-string form efficiency is a market where the prices of securities are completely and available including historical information. The information is public and readily available if the information updated quickly. Investors can make excess returns with updated information. The hypothesis uses the assumption that investors are trading their securities with an average risk return. The higher the risk the more money that investors can make. A journal article mentions,
To test for semi-strong form efficiency, the adjustments to previously unknown news must be of a reasonable size and must be instantaneous. To test for this, consistent upward or downward adjustments after the initial change must be looked for. If there are any such adjustments it would suggest that investors had interpreted the information in a biased fashion and hence in an inefficient manner (Sandhar et al., 2009).
What measures the investor’s reaction is the empirical research into semi-strong form efficiency, is the empirical research in a form of an event study. The event study measures the stock price behavior (Jones et al., 2020). However, the con for the theory is that the historic information is irrational due to previous market panic in the part. “

Basic functionality of the Stock market
Part 1: Research: Learn the key terms and basic functionality of the stock market.Research the stock market. What is a stock? What is a share? What is an exchange? Identify the various exchanges where stocks can be traded and discuss their similarities and differences (i.e. NYSE, NASDAQ). What types of companies are traded on each?Research stock market performance indicators, such as the DOW Jones and S&P 500. What do the indicators measure? How do they help predict the performance of the market? What are their flaws?Research the sectors of the market. Identify three companies in each sector.Research companies in which you would invest. What characteristics do they have that make them good prospects? In other words, why might you choose to invest in each one of them?Compile the answers to these questions in a research report consisting of four to five well-developed paragraphs. UCF Addressing Overfishing Through Government Interventions Essay
Case Study – General Education / Process Writing Assignment (#GEA1) (20%):As part of the general education program in Intellectual and Practical Skills, this course will include the State’s Communication/Writing requirement of coursework. To meet this requirement students will demonstrate college-level writing skills through a single process writing assignment. “Process writing” is deep and meaningful and tightly aligned with the course’s student learning outcomes; particularly those of critical and analytical thinking, problem-solving, and creative thinking. This is a three-part assignment, but a coherently-themed whole. Feedback will be provided to students after each part of the assignment. The students will progressively explore parts of decision-making, incorporating deeper and increasingly meaningful arguments within the discipline as we move through the course. At each step students will delve deeper into the learning outcomes, reflecting more sophisticated responses as their body of knowledge grows. In this case, study students show how Microeconomics concepts can be used to understand current events in the news. Students are tasked with applying economic thinking and reasoning skills developed throughout the semester to analyze real-world examples and offer solutions to current issues. A detailed explanation of this assignment will be posted on Canvas.Assessment and Rubric for GEAs (Total 100%):● Economic Concepts 20% - Essay makes several logical economic arguments and analyzes each question using correct and appropriate economic analysis, terms, and concepts.● Graphical Analysis 20% - Analyzes policy issue with appropriate a supply and demand diagram● Policy Evaluation 20% – Description and explanation of the existing policy. Analysis and evaluation of issues/problems present a balanced and critical view; interpretation is both reasonable and objective.● Creative Thinking and Problem Solving 20% - Finds solutions to difficult or complex issues. Supports recommendations and opinions with strong arguments● Organization and Written communication 20% - Essay demonstrates critical thought and problem-solving through a logical progression of ideas with mature and graceful while maintaining a clear structure that enhances the thesis. Punctuation, spelling, and capitalization are correct. This portion of the assignment also has two main parts. You should incorporate these with the previous draft to form a cohesive whole. Do not include section title/headers.Part I - (this draws on monopoly and antitrust regulation (Ch 15) to improve the argument made in the Rough Draft as well as describe an unintended consequence) Consider catch shares and the negative aspects of this government intervention. In addition to improving your paper based on the feedback you received, add to your previous discussion of catch shares using what you have learned about how monopolists make pricing and output decisions and how and why market power is a problem. Recall from the documentary how catch shares and monopoly are related. Include any other negative aspects of catch shares that you find through your own research.Part II - (this requires you to offer a creative alternate solution to the consequence you described above)Now put yourself in the role of a social advocate. Noting the problems you presented above, what solutions do you have to help protect society? Offer an alternative solution that addresses the issues you noted in the rough draft and avoids the problems you noted above. Be creative, you are not limited to possible government interventions but should also consider potential interventions from other groups in society.Note: This is the final part of the writing assignment. No section titles are necessary however you must submit a cohesive completed paper with title page, introduction, body, conclusion, a graph, and bibliography page. The paper should breakdown the fishing market and problems within it, evaluate the current solution and it’s limitations, and propose an original contribution/potential solution - use economic terminology throughout. This is a graded assignment. You should refer to the rubric before you begin writing as well as during the writing process: GEA1 Rubric.pdfThe body of the text must be at least 7, no more than 8, full pages: a revision of the first 4 pages already submitted (addressing all comments you received on the draft as well as integrating the draft with this new part) PLUS an additional 3 pages. It should be in written your own words and not a series of quoted texts. Your document must follow formatting rules (font, spacing, margins, etc), see GenEd Assignments.Only use in-line citations with the author and the year in parentheses at the end of the sentence; do not include citations in the footers. The full citation should be given on the bibliography page only.Make sure to include a title page and an updated bibliography page (both should be on their own pages and not share a page with the body of the text). Graphs/Charts/Figures/Bibliography should be at the very end of the text and are not included in page count.Submit your final assignment using Turnitin under assignments Case Study #GEA1 and #GEA1 (Duplicate) As part of the general education program in Intellectual and Practical Skills this course will include the State’s Communication/Writing requirement of coursework https://www.usf.edu/undergrad/fkl-for-faculty-and-staff/stategeneds.aspx.
