Topic vs. Argument (thesis): As you begin to formulate a thesis for your paper, think about the following distinction between topic and thesis. A topic is a general area of inquiry; derived from the Greek topos (place), "topic" designates the general subject of your paper. For instance, the use of comparison/contrast in Douglass's Narrative might be a topic for a paper. From a topic, many specific theses can be extracted and developed. A thesis is more specific and delimited; it exists "within" your topic. In your paper, you need to use an argumentative thesis. In argumentative writing, the writer takes a stance and offers reasons in support of that position. Crucial to any piece of argumentative writing is its thesis. The thesis arises from the topic, or subject , on which the writing focuses, and may be defined as follows: A thesis is an idea, stated as an assertion, which represents a reasoned response to a question at issue and which will serve as the central idea of a unified composition. If you've selected characterization as a means of communicating the message or and insight about the narrative, then ask: how does Douglass present the characters? How do we learn about each one? Is the character static? Dynamic? What function does the character serve in the work? When you compose a thesis statement, think about how it satisfies the following tests: 1. Is it an idea? Does it state, in a complete sentence, an assertion? 2. Does it make a claim that is truly contestable and therefore engaging? 3. Are the terms you are using precise and clear? 4. Has the thesis developed out of a process of reasoning? Once these questions have been satisfactorily answered, use the resulting thesis to organize your evidence and begin the actual writing. As you do so, bear in mind the following questions: 1. What is my purpose in writing? What do I want to prove? 2. What question(s) does my writing answer? 3. Why do I think this question is important? Will other people think it equally important? 4. What are my specific reasons, my pieces of evidence? Does each piece of evidence support the claim I make in my thesis? 5. Where does my reasoning weaken or even stop? Am I merely offering opinions without reasoned evidence? 6. How can I best persuade my reader? Again, remember to use the vocabulary of literature in your papers, to provide specific examples as evidence and support for your claim, to cite page numbers, and to document primary and secondary sources (if you use research in this paper),X first paper The key things to remember are that your paper 1) Must have an argument; 2) Use the vocabulary of literature; 3) Support its position from specific examples in the text. 4) Reflect the Modern Language Association guidelines for usage and style (www.mla.org).

The Role of Dreams in “A raisin in the sun”
“A raisin in the sun” is a play about the lives of an African American family living in
Southern Chicago. They live in the low income areas which then shape the whole idea behind
this argumentative paper. The Younger’s family consists of Lena, who is the mother to Walter
Lee and Beneatha. Ruth is Walter’s wife while Travis is Walter’s and Ruth’s son. The family
lives in a two-bedroomed house which ought to sustain a family of three but manages to house
five of the Younger’s. With the level of poverty they live in, the family is lucky to receive a life
insurance policy worth $10,000. It comes at the perfect time when there is a probability of
having their dreams brought to life.
Mama has a dream of purchasing a house in the entirely white neighborhood of Clybourne
Park, a dream that she shared with her deceased husband. She feels that her family could use a
more spacious house in which they can all comfortably live in and call home. Walter, her son,
has a dream of teaming up with his friends, Willy Harris and Bobo, so as to start a liquor store, a
dream that he believes will help get his family out of poverty thus increasing their financial
capability. Beneatha, being the youngest and the only daughter, hopes to get the money to cater
for her medical school. She has been studying medicine, despite the family being at the heart of
poverty and struggling to meet their daily needs. Ruth usually tidies up after the family and looks
