The systems approach to management is a collection of interrelated parts that act
together to accomplish underlying goals within a particular environment. Primarily, this
approach perceives the organization as an open or a closed system. Whereas an open system
is one that interacts with its environments by ways of establishing relationships between
inputs, throughputs and outputs, a closed system is essentially isolated and self-contained.
Closed systems are non-adaptive and does not establish any forms of relationships with the
external environments. The systems approach seeks to examine linkages between the
components that compound the entire system by providing comprehensive means of
understanding, analysing and evaluating the design and construction of the organization as a
complex integrated composition of several interconnected system (Kerzner, 2013).
