Chapter 1 (Focused Topic: Resilience and the Three Systems)
One major theme of our first chapter is Erikson's claim that human life is produced by the interaction of
three major systems: the biological system, the psychological system, and the societal system. Several
examples are discussed to illustrate this concept. In the discussion on Poverty in the chapter the concept
of 'resilience' is discussed as a characteristic that enables some children to thrive despite the challenges
This special topic is specifically for discussing the issue of resilience as it relates to the interactions of
the three major systems discussed in chapter 1. You might use examples of poverty and resiliency from
the text as a starting point to discuss how different factors support (or weaken) the ability of children to
thrive despite the challenges of environments such as growing up in poverty. Alternatively, you might
use examples of your own choosing (or even your own life story described in your lifeline).
In your response make sure to point out which of the three systems are at work and how they interact to
enhance or weaken resiliency in children. Remember to refer to concepts from the text and provide a
page number where appropriate. The name of the book is Development Through Life: A Psychosocial Approach. This is the link: https://books.google.com/books?id=FqwzGlvU_1EC&pg=...
