Dear Senator Perdue, My name is Alphonsa Joseph. I reside at 1568 Doubletree Dr, Columbus, GA. I am an FNP student at South University. I am writing this to offer you support in response to the pending bill (HR18) to amend Chapter 12A of Title 31 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to smoke-free air, to prohibit smoking inside any motor vehicle when a person who is under 18 years of age is present; to support for associated issues; to null and void contradictory laws; and for other intentions. I think that it is very important to pass this bill to save the minors from the second hand smoke which is very detrimental to their health. I included some research published for your reference. I offer my whole hearted support in making this bill (HR18) to be entitled an Act. I am grateful for your help, and I request you to grant me reply at your convenience to let me know if you are able to pass the Bill-HR18. Thanking you, Sincerely, Alphonsa Joseph. 3. Evidence based primary citations. American Lung Association stated that secondhand smoke is injurious to kids and is accountable for 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract diseases in newborns and kids who are under 18 months, causing 7,500 to 15,000 admissions to hospitals annually. It is accountable for 430 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths in the U.S. per year. Exposure to second hand smoke may result in the collection of fluid in the middle ear, causing 790,000 visits to clinics annually, and more than 202,000 asthma outbursts in kids annually ("Health effects of secondhand smoke," n.d.). A study published by CDC showed that regulation of tobacco and prevention works are necessary to choose smokefree standards in residence, personal cars, and in outside play spaces for kids (Zhang, Martinez, & Rhoads, 2015). A study conducted by the Stanford University researchers found that the second hand smoke in a two hour car drive with a smoker in it is well above the government safety standards (Orenstein, 2007).
