(Christopher) The process to recover fingerprint evidence at the crime scene can be done by using several different methods. The collection of finger prints will also, include both palm prints and bare footprints. Since prints may have been left on different items, different methods of collecting the prints may be used. Generally, collecting fingerprints at a crime scene requires very few materials. From a cost standpoint, collecting fingerprints at a crime scene requires very few materials (Schiro, n.d.). One simple method of collecting prints is by using photography. Patent prints can be collected using photography. These prints should be photographed in high resolution with a forensic measurement scale in the image for reference. These images can be approved by using low-angle or alternate light sources, and/or certain chemicals or dyes during photography. Alternative light sources are laser or LED devices that emit a particular wavelength, or spectrum, of light. These devices have different filters to provide a variety of spectra that can be photographed or possibly processed with powders or dye stains (Fingerprint Analysis, n.d.). Items that are not able to moved, in this case a window frame or lock, should be processed at the scene using gray powder, black powder, or black magnetic powder. If any prints appear, they should be photographed, and then lifted from the surface with clear adhesive tape. The tape that is lifted should then be placed on a latent lift card to preserve the print. An example of this, would be using this device to cast a spectrum to pull up prints found on the counter or register at the convenience store that was robbed (Schiro, n.d). All small transportable items should be properly labeled and packaged in paper bags or envelopes, and sent to the crime lab for processing, this case broken glass from the window or small items by the register that could have been touched. While at the scene, prints should still be collected from any victims or workers at the convince store to create elimination prints, so that these prints can later be compared to suspects prints that were also found at the scene (Schiro, n.d.). The items that were collected at the scene of the crime can be examined back at the lab for prints. Investigators will often use cyanoacrylate (superglue) processing, or fuming, of a surface before applying powder or dye stains. This process is generally done on non-porous surfaces. This process involves the exposing of the object, in this case possibly a bag of chips touched by the suspect, to cyanoacrylate vapors. The vapors or fumes will adhere to the any prints that are present on the evidence collected, which will allow the prints to become viewable with oblique ambient light or a white light source (Fingerprint Analysis, n.d.). Now objects collected with porous surfaces, such as money found at the crime scene, are typically processed with chemicals. This could be Ninhydrin and a physical developer that can be used to reveal latent prints. These chemicals react with specific components of latent print residue. The Ninhydrin will cause the prints to turn a purple color, which allows them to be easily photographed (Fingerprint Analysis, n.d.). Schiro, G. (n.d.). Collection and Preservation of Evidence. Describe how to collect, handle and analyze this evidence. Upon the discovery of the torn check, I would first ask my witness, the store manager or owner who is still standing by, whether or not they recognize it or know anything about it. The name on the upper left corner could also provide clues, as well as the routing number along the bottom. These routing numbers are unique identifiers to each region and bank and account in the country. If the check was made out to someone the name to whom it was endorsed could provide clues. Furthermore, handwriting analysis could possibly be performed in an attempt to compare it to samples obtained in hopes that an identity may be made. The torn check could also be fingerprinted and that print sent to an AFIS for comparison. Fingerprint examiners use partial, potentially distorted and degrade friction ridge impressions recovered from crime scenes to attempt to identify the identity of criminals (Neumann, Champod, Yoo, Genessay & Langenburg, 2015). Many people do not realize that fingerprints can be left on documents, therefore they do not think about using gloves. The collection of any sort of evidence should be performed by the collector using sterile gloves. Any document evidence should immediately be placed into a plastic sheet or something similar in order to retain any evidence that may be contained on the document itself (Gaensslen, Harris & Lee, 2008). This aids in ensuring the evidence is not tainted by the collector themselves. A pair of tweezers would also be beneficial in collecting this scrap of paper. The small footprint of the tweezers on the paper is insurance against any evidence being damaged or removed. Trace evidence such as epithelial and hair should be protected as they may be able to offer DNA evidence. I would also take photos of the check to document where it was found, and to show that it was already torn when it was discovered. The pictures showing where the document was and how it was found could later identify other characteristics not thought about at the crime scene itself. Photographic evidence has led to conclusions later during the investigation that may not have been obvious at the scene during the initial examination. Photographic evidence is also admissible in court and combined with analysis and lab evidence could assist in securing a conviction if a suspect is found and prosecuted. The existence of the check may even lead to an altogether different investigation. Analysis of the document could determine if it had been stolen, forged, or altered. New technologies have hindered forgeries in all mediums, however the forgers adapt and create their own new technologies. One of these even includes using the fiber structure of the paper itself in order to identify if a forgery has occurred (Takalo, Timonen, Sampo, Rantala, Siltanan, Lassas, 2014). If the other half of the check were found, the two halves could also be placed together and microscopically compared, to ensure they are indeed a match. Some other methods used in comparisons are various light sources. The use of these produces different colors in the ink used and although the inks may appear exactly the same to the naked eye, under alternative lights they will show different colors, thus indicating altering.

Christopher is right on the fact that there are various methods that can be used when
recovering fingerprint evidence. The process involves four steps. The first step is locating the
fingerprints. This must be done by looking for materials that might have the prints on them. The
second step is the use of photography. Photographs can be used to collect patent prints. The
prints which are not visible can either be enhanced digitally or by the use of specific forensic
chemicals (Sheridan, 2013).
The third step is lifting of the fingerprints after dusting. This method is done to ensu...
