Directions: Be sure to save an electronic copy of your answer before submitting it to Ashworth College for grading. Unless otherwise stated, answer in complete sentences, and be sure to use correct English, spelling and grammar. Sources must be cited in APA format. Your response should be four (4) double-spaced pages; refer to the "Assignment Format" page located on the Course Home page for specific format requirements.

After completing this assignment you will be able to:

  • Determine the differences between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
  • Understand the importance of neurotransmitters.
  • Discuss the differences between Alzheimer’s and old age.

Part A:

  • Imagine you are being chased through the woods by a hungry bear.
    • Which nervous system would engage (parasympathetic or sympathetic)? Why is this?
    • What would be the effects of this system on your:
      • Eyes
      • Skin
      • Respiratory System
      • d. Skeletal muscles
    • Describe the neurotransmitter family that is activated in this situation.
  • Imagine that you are home with the flu.

    Part A:
Imagine you are being chased through the woods by a hungry bear. Which nervous system
would engage (parasympathetic or sympathetic)? Why is this?
Sympathetic nervous system would be engaged.
This is the branch of autonomic nervous system .It is activated during life-threatening
situations, flight-or-fight (reaction to either flee or stand and fight) and in dealing with stress.
What would be the effects of this system on the:
    Eye
The major effects of the sympathetic autonomic nervous system to the eye include:
There is contraction of papillary dilator muscles (mydriasis) and contraction of superior tarsal
muscle to hold the eye open through α1 receptor. Secondly, there is relaxation of ciliary muscle
for distant vision, enhancement of aqueous humor formation through β2 receptor and inhibition
of vitreous humor formation through α2 receptors. The goal of all these effects is to enable
dilatation of the pupil for clearer vision
    Skin
Through the α1 receptors, sympathetic autonomic nervous system causes slight, localized
increased sweating and contraction of the pilomotor muscle resulting into erect hair on the skin
surface and “Goosebumps”. Secondly, there is also reduced blood supply to the skin and as a
result, there is pallor and flushing seen on skin surface. This is due...
