Organization Structure and Employee Behaviour
Question: How does the structure of an organization affect employee behavior and
workplace productivity?
The structure of an organization depicts how people are organized to accomplish
certain tasks. The structure determines the relationship between business managers and the
employees. Different positions in the structure accompany different powers and authorities as
well as duties and responsibilities. Those high in the structure have authority over those lower
in the structure. Different levels handle different tasks. The top position holders make
strategic decisions for the organization. The middle-level managers implement the decisions
while the operational level carries out the day to day functions of the business. The
organization structure can have both positive and adverse effects on employees behavior and
consequently on the overall level of productivity.
The structures determine the behavior of employees. Employees are the most
important components of an organization. They determine whether an organization will
succeed or fail. The more efficient structure is in an organization the, better the behavior of

organization. A poor structure can also cause confusion to the employees. According to the
14 principles of management, an employee should be answerable to one boss. If the employee
is answerable to more than one boss, the employee is likely to get confused.
A poor structure also compromises the quality of decision making. This gives rise to
various issues whereby the decision-making criteria and process are comprised. There is no
certainty on who should make the final decision. Poor decisions result to business failure.

is compromised, and things are done poorly. Decisions are delayed and are of low quality.
Coordination becomes hard to achieve, and the firm is not able to reach its goals and
objectives. The firm is not able to Nature creativity due to the bureaucracies inherent in the
structure. Managerial functions are not achieved. There is a poor allocation of resources and
much resource wastage.
On the other hand, a good organization structure can positively affect the employee
behavior and increase the level of productivity for an organization. One of the organizations
with a good organization structure is Walmart. In Walmart, the store managers are always
open. Employees can always visit the managers at any time they want without necessarily
making prior appointments. This makes the employees feel important and creates a smooth
channel to air their grievances. Feedback for any inquiries by the employees is given on the
