I wiped away my tears as I entered Pu Dong International Airport. Behind me was my crying mother and fifteen memorable years of happiness and comfort. I knew I was leaving everything behind to future that seemed so distant. As an only child, I was showered with love and spoiled by my parents. I never had to worry about being self-sufficient. Every day, my parents would drive me to my destinations. At school, my friends were nice and plentiful. We studied together, laughed together, and helped each other with whatever silly woes came our way. This was life back in China of course; life in America has been a whole different story. At age fifteen, I had to live away from the comfort of my parents. On only my third day of being in America, I walked to Walnut High School – a place full of strangers. In fact, my legs became my method of transportation, and I walk everywhere. If I want to visit a location farther away, I usually take a Taxi. I have come to learn that taking a taxi is strange in my location The only yellow taxi cab on the streets of Southern California probably has me in the back seat! After all of my various taxi cab adventures, I have come to realize that perhaps it is symbolic of something more meaningful: I have become independent. During my high school years, I was dealing with insurance papers and government documents that most children my age were unfamiliar with. Because I struggled with my English, these everyday tasks were much more difficult for me. I do believe that the greatest challenge I faced was with English. It was the barrier that always made me feel out of place. My accent seemed unchangeable, and my meager vocabulary was another handicap. In order to get out from my ESL classes quickly, I decided to utilize my newfound independence to my advantage. I began listening to ABC newscasts, and reading challenging novels in my spare time. I even pushed my nerves aside and began to speak up in class, and also converse with teachers and students alike. I began to notice my quick progress, and I became much more confident with my English skills. I even advanced to regular English classes in only one semester, a feat that was admirable to the rest of my struggling ESL classmates. After my move to America, I have become well adjusted to creating a new lifestyle. I still remember the anxiety I felt at Pu Dong International Airport as I was leaving behind a comfortable life. However, these past three years have been the most important years of my life. I have pushed my boundaries, passed challenging obstacles, and have ultimately established myself in my society as a diligent student and a loyal friend. Whereas before moving was bittersweet, now I am only excited to move again when I begin the third chapter of my life in college.

Journey of my Life
As I started my education years ago, I enrolled with high hopes. I felt that my future was
bright and I was prepared for the journey. As a young person, I grew up having dreams that one
day I would be in a school that would provide me an enhanced education. When I first enrolled in
college, I was very excited, but I did not have any idea of what education entails. It felt wonderful
that I had the chance to go on with my education. I was, however, not aware of how to succeed in
my first semester and this made it look like a challenge. Something inside kept on telling me that
it is a great opportunity and I should grab it or else it would pass me. I searched for supports from
every asset available in the college, and unexpectedly I made it through easily by the support I got
from everyone around me.
When looking back at my childhood, the possibility of me succeeding to this second would
appear highly improbable. Being born into a dysfunctional family, between my mom and dad,
firstly molded my communication manners all through my childhood and into my youth. During
the early stages of my life, I battered with communication and reading knowledge, which made
certain aspects of school enormously difficulties for me. However, it was thought to be perfect in
mathematics and writing. My education struggles made it difficult for me to improve academic
confidence during my youth. Therefore, studying during my youth felt more like a problem than
an educational journey
Reflecting on those early years, I recall who and what I dreamt of becoming. I always
believed that I had all the potential to want to become anything I wanted because of all the strength
and willpower I put forth. It was incredible how studying came so ordinary despite being so young.
I was at all times an honest a student and was very committed to my education. My college

education journey began in 2012, and I still remember feeling very excited enrolling the school
despite my struggle due to the language barrier and I have been in the chase of my degree for
relatively some time.
Moreover, I have not allowed obstacles to distract and deject me from attaining my degree.
For example, my language barrier was an obstacle for quite some time which made me determined
to put effort and be fluent in english. However, this experience of learning a new language was
challenging but at the same time worthwhile. All my life, my English was not good, which made
it very hard to understand and communicate with my professors.
My ESL teacher, Ms. Debell made it her personal goal to assist me in learning English
which made me better each and every day. This was an intimidating task that I permitted to
discourage me from my dreams. Even though I am not currently fluent in English, I carry on
learning and reading so as to improve my expressions and pronunciation. Learning the language
has been a blessing in my profession since I can assist other people who are in the course of
learning English and I can use this ability to assist other people as I put into practice the governance
skills.
Furthermore, I have overcome many problems on the journey to getting a college degree.
This journey has been of much importance to me and my time spent in this institution as it has
been both a fulfilling and eye-opening experience. Over the course of my time at this college, I
