PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INTERACTIONS IN EGYPT AND THEIR CONCEPT OF MORAL
BEHAVIOR
As has been mentioned in the readings, it should be noted that the history of the
Egyptians is one that is still in obscure for two major reasons. The first being that there are very
few experts on Egyptian culture who have the ability to interpret and translate the Egyptian
readings. On the second major reason, there are very few original texts that have the concrete and

comprehensive recordings on the ancient Egyptian way of life. Its implication being that the
whole concept of Egyptian culture should be seen from the angle of seeking to understand the
events that were taking place, about what has been provided by the materials. The focus of the
essay is how the people interpreted the behavior amongst themselves and how the moral
behavior was viewed in the Egyptian culture.
One of the major things that are evident is that there is a social order in the Egyptian
culture. The inclination being that there was a clear governing structure within the society. There
was the royal class, which was headed by the pharaoh. The royal family did not have any
counterparts and were in their class. It means that the people who belonged to this group were
the cream of the society.
The royal family was respected, and the people had to ensure that they respected the royal
family. About the members of the public, it should be noted that the public was supposed to
follow a particular moral behavior while addressing the royal family. In the Egyptian culture, the
Pharaoh was seen as the overall ruler, both politically and religiously. The moral behavior meant
that the public was supposed to offer sacrifices, in the form of harvests and pottery to the
pharaoh.
There was a clear moral conduct that was expected by moral behavior when relating to
the royal family. For instance, there was the moral that was very clear that an individual did not
have to face the king in the eye when he or she was addressing him unless given authority by the
king to do that. Anything short of that was not good for the moral behavior of the society in
interacting with the monarchy. It was also apparent that the Pharaoh and all other members of the
royal family had the upper hand regarding the members of the public. In short, there was a clear
moral standard that was established regarding the relation between the two groups. The king's

palace, as described in the reading materials as ‘the private domain of the king, the inmates were
sequestered and the quarters declared off-limits to most staff and officials of the palace’ (Redford
7) and anything that violated such an arrangement would be considered as a violation of the
moral behavior.
It should be noted that the moral behavior dictated that the practicing of the sorcery and
magic could be a way of relating to the people. The readings note that the people had the
freedom to practice all this, but with the inclination that it was not a way of bringing harm to
other individuals. The sorcery was acceptable within the larger Egyptian culture and society. The
sorcery was one way in which the people were seen to be relating to the king, as their services
could be consulted by the king. The sorcery and the magic were also a way of treating the people
from the moral demons that some members of the society could face. The inclination being that
the sorcery in the society was not only a way of dealing with the immoral behavior but also a
way of making a living (Karenga 78).
There is a clear regard to the people who have broken the laws that had been established
in the Egyptian system. It should be noted that some of the major immoral behavior was talking
ill of the king. It was supposed to b...
