Novel Analysis
Introduction
The novel, Slaughterhouse-Five focuses on the First World War, during and after the war
events (Vonnegut, 1988). The novel is non-fiction, fictitious, arguably science fiction and brings
out the antiwar aspects, historical fiction, autobiographical and science fiction features. The
story was published in 1969 by Kurt Vonnegut and depicts the soldier's life during the World
War II. The writer uses the change of tone to bring out the different events especially that
marked; what happened before and after the world war two. On the other hand, Tim O’Brien
anti-war book Things They Carried is grounded on Alpha company’s soldiers in the Vietnam
battle as a fictitious chronicle (O'Brien, 1990). On the contrary, the Slaughterhouse highlights
Billy Pilgrim’s experiences in the metropolitan of Dresden as an American prisoner in Germany
leading to the Allied bombing that happened. The two novels focus on fiction novelistic style to
paint a real picture of what happened.
Children's perspective on the Slaughterhouse Five
The Slaughterhouse Five used unbelievable scenes when the main character is abducted
“…. saucer was from the planet Tralfamadore.” drawing a lot of attribution as a science fiction
novel (Vonnegut, 1988). The life of the main character is also unrealistic between events during
and also after the world war II, from prison to abduction, marriage to a widower and last when he
starts suffering from mental illness. The novel main events were aimed to display the war and the
second supernatural events. The story depicts what war can cause by bringing out the elements of
frustrations thus the effects of conflict on the human mind. Billy the main character belief in

supernatural things could be concluded as schizophrenia. Children believe in fantasy, and such
an approach would have been ideal to evoke their attention in the first chapter (Bradbury, 2005).
There is a significant use of symbolism in the Slaughterhouse–Five story. The jabbering
bird in the narration is a symbolism of the lack of intelligent words to describe the war. The
chirping of birdsongs in the silence after a horrifying massacre and “poo-tee-weet?’ represents
blue and ivory while Billy is the main protagonist finds it difficult to make something useful out
