Overview The History of 3D Printing Key Figures in the Development of 3D Printing Importance of 3D Printing to General Managers Cost of 3D Printing Effects of 3D Printing on Society Conclusion Bibliography Overview 3D printing, or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. 3D printing was first introduced by Hideo Kodama in 1980. In 1983, Charles Hull developed the first prototype 3D printer. He called it Stereolithography (SLA) and developed the STL file format widely used today. Being as technology is consistently changing, SLA was not the only development during this time. In 1987, Carl Deckard developed the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and in 1989 Scott Crump developed Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). Hideo Kodama, Charles Hull, Carl Deckard, and Scott Crump helped progress the development of 3D printing. From the scarce use 3D printing then, 3D printing is being used to create car parts, smartphone cases, fashion accessories, medical equipment, artificial organs, and many more, today. 3D printing has become very important advancement in technology. The importance of 3D printing for general managers is the amount of time it takes to produce the product and the number of products that can be produced in a time frame. 3D printing is a significant importance in industries such as medical, engineering, and architecture. The implications of 3D printing to business and society is the difficultly of stopping the distribution of illegal objects, personal interaction will reduce, but mass personalization will increase and it will have a positive effect on the environment. 3D printing is evolving and becoming a part of our everyday lives. Art and design have taken over our society in which 3D printing can appear in homes now. This marks the start of a new era of creation where people can create, experiment, and share ideas through the Web. 3D printing is influential in many industries and this is only the beginning.
