As such, the teachers who handle these students should accord particular attention to the students and keep a close contact with their parents. The special attention and helps given to the special students helps them to overcome the challenges they may face in school while teaching the caregivers how to offer the required help for the normal operations in school and at home. On the side of the teachers and parents, they face challenges and the process of caring for the special student’s impacts their lives. The interview given to the parents of a special child, and the teacher of the student has highlighted the activities of the parents and the teachers, the skills required, and the overall experience of dealing with the children. The parent and teacher interviews were conducted according to the requirements as guided by the instructions. The documented questions were issued to the particular parent and the teacher for them to answer to the best of their knowledge. The parent and the teacher were allowed to answer the questions they deemed necessary or were comfortable with. As such, the interviewee comfort during the research was a priority during the interview. The interview was aimed at realizing the challenges that they face while assisting the child with exceptionality. The impact of living and dealing with the child was also the focus of the interview. The teacher to the child was the first to interview. The teacher identified that the child had Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The teacher described the student as having a difficult time managing his material and time as well. ADD is a mental disorder arising from a neurodevelopmental problem. The child has a problem paying attention. The teacher further described the child as having the intellectual challenges of not being able to stay on a particular EXCEPTIONALITIES INTERVIEW REPORT 3 task. The child was identified as remaining focused only for short periods. He, however, identified that the child does not have any emotional and social challenges. The teacher reported using a student timer, an hourly behavior chart, and a chart for the number of questions the student completes within 35 minutes of a test. The teacher explained that the student aimed to complete ten questions within the 35 minutes testing time frame. The student then proceeds to graph his weekly scores on a chart. The teacher recognized that the child did not have an Individualized Education Program but was on a problem-solving therapy program. The teacher said that he communicated with the parent whenever he deemed necessary; sometimes he sends positive notes home and texts the mother pictures of student behavior chart. According to the teacher, the student enjoys reading counts tests and sometimes is assisted by a helper with unknown words from the book and test. He also receives help with logging into the computer. The teacher also discussed how he works to provide support and the impact it has on him. He said that working with the student with exceptionalities requires, patience, care, good parentteacher communication, organizational skills, and teamwork. He explains that in a bid to work with others to support the student, he keeps an open communication with the school psychologist, the reading, and math intervention teacher and other para-professional and special area teachers as well. The teacher realized that special children have much to offer if accorded the opportunity. He further explained that the students with exceptionalities are loving and can learn with the necessary support, dedication, and patience. The interview with the parent and the teacher of a child with exceptionalities showed the experiences and impacts of the care to the caregivers. The interview revealed that the people who deal with the different children living with exceptionalities face various challenges of educating EXCEPTIONALITIES INTERVIEW REPORT 4 them but understanding their needs enables them to deal with the challenges and overcome them. The interview also shows that dealing with students who have exceptionalities brings out their usefulness in the society and that they could offer much to the society if they are well understood. The different techniques used such as the score tests and assistance by psychologists help the students to live a normal life. Dealing with children who have disabilities can be challenging but according to their caretakers, understanding them brings out their love and usefulness in the society.
This report provides information about the challenge of having a kid with a special need. I had the opportunity to speak with Noemi Medina her son Jordanie who is nine years old now have ADA and learning disability. She shares with me all everything she had done to help her son. 1. Description of the disability • • • • Jordanie is a happy kid who loves Stars Wars. His condition sometimes is not seen with naked eye. His condition is ADA and learning disability. He did not have any physical challenge. On the other hand, his intellectual sometimes can be very challenging he have problem with mathematics, language arts, he has problem with direction, get distracted easily and forget things often. Jordanie is very friendly and like to help other. But sometimes do to his condition he can be irritated easily. This can put him in trouble. He has improved with his social skill. Before he used to play more by his self now little by little he is playing with other kids at extended day in school. 2. Medications, therapies needed to address this child’s challenges. • Joradanie take Retalin 10 mg twice a day first in the morning and later at school at 1:00pm before the effect of the first dose is gone. This has help him to improve a little be with his lack of concentration and his grade are better too. 3. How often do you communicate with professionals that work with your child? • Noemi have meeting with Jordanie teacher every 3 moth to see his academic evolution. Twice a year she also has the IEP meeting they go over the different helps he receives and how this helped him. • Jordanie teacher have an app call Class Dojo she keeps the parent updated with everything that happen in the classroom and is a great tool to be in contact with her too. Include adaptations that are made for the child to be able to participate in the activities. • Jordanie love to dance sing and play with his Star Wars toy. He is not shy he love to entertained he can have preformed on a stage and he change completely is like a different kid. He said that when he grows up he will be an artist. 5. Who cares for the child (education, physical needs, entertainment)? • Jordanie parents are always involve in his education. They help him with his homework. • The always looked for a way to get Jordanie more responsible with his work at school. • Since his father work for an airline he has the opportunity to travel to different city if he does good at school. 6. How has your life been impacted by your child? • Having a kid always change your life said Noemi. But having a kid with ADA and learning disability challenge you as a mom. • • I have learned to be more patient for example when I gave him instruction be simple otherwise he wont do it. The most important thing for me is treat him like any normal kid and gave him lot a love. I need help with this art. I can not think in a question right now. 7.
