The myth that I chose to share this week with the class is the myth of the “Civil War” was primarily about slavery. It is true that slavery was one of the key factors the caused tension with the Northern and Southern states in the period of 1861 to 1865. This unfortunately is over simplification of the explanation being that the south just wanted to keeps slaves and the north was fighting to free them. The Truth of the matter is that Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was not in acted until a full two years into the war. What makes matters worse is that the proclamation by its own wording only freed slaves in the states that were at the time of war not a part of the Union and did not effective the pro slave states of the Union this would include General Ulysses S. Grant of Ohio (Darnell, 2012). There were a multitude of factors that can be said to play a role in what cause the drift and inevitability of the war between the states. The factors would include State’s right, preservation of the Union, tariffs, the industrialization of the north that was trying to keep up with its competitor Europe, and the matter in which the government would governor by law vs. governing by bullying (Darnell, 2012).

The most significant of all these issue of the war, was the issue of over centralization vs. decentralization of power between the federal government and the states (Darnell, 2012). The Southern states on the border of the Confederation and the Union understood this best of all. While their compatriots the deep-south states were so quick to secede from the Union after the election of Lincoln out of fear for his professed anti-slavery policies, the Southern Border States maintained their neutrality, until President Lincoln actually declared war on the Deep--South states and ordered the borderline southern states to raise up armies to invade them (Darnell, 2012). Though the borderline southern states did not agree with the Deep South states about their policies they did not feel that this ordained them to persecute the deep-south states to stay in a federal government system they did not trust (Darnell, 2012). They remembered the principle of the Declaration that legitimate governments must have the consent of the governed, and the Deep South states at that time did not consent to being governed by the federal government (Darnell, 2012).

I have had this argument with many of people from all walks of life. Unfortunately, the most common misconception is that the war was about slavery don’t get me wrong I do not believe that slavery is right and don’t support the lifestyle in which the deeper southern states live by the war was never actually about slavery. It was about the how the government was try to force their control over the southern states and make them change to better fit their plan for the country and people down south didn’t like that. Which is actually the reason we became our own country in the first place. England try to inflict their control over America and we were haven’t it now this is a gross oversimplification of the “Revolutionary War” and the reason behind it but I believe that this is exactly what happen once again. You know what they say the winner’s write the history books and that’s why a majority of the masses believe the Civil War was mostly about slavery.

The myth I chose to write about for this week's forum is Black Thursday. Black Thursday, October 24, 1929, is the day that the stock market began to crash. Most people have been told that there were many stockbrokers that jumped out of their windows when they learned of the stock market crash, which is what I have believed until today, but this is not the case. While reading about this myth, I learned that the suicide rate was actually higher earlier in the year, when the stock market was doing well. There are many newspaper articles, one is pictured on the website, that tell the story of suicide rates rising because of the stock market crash, but the number of suicides during this time was exaggerated. In reality, there were only two people that committed suicide by jumping out of their windows after the stock market crashed (Mason, 2016).

I think that the reason this myth started, and is still believed today, is because people wanted to dramatize this day even more. They wanted to make it seem as if it was so horrible that all of the stockbrokers jumped out of their windows. I do not understand why anyone would need to dramatize this day any more, especially since this day, and the days after, contributed to the Great Depression. I think that, during this time, people did not realize exactly how bad things would become for them. The people I believe are responsible for this myth are journalists, who wanted to write a good story so they dramatized the event.

The "myth" that I chose to use has a broad perspective when it comes to World War II and it's victims. It doesn't pertain to only history in the United States, but a part of WWII in general. Due to movie illustrations and even information in history textbooks, many believe that Jews were the only targeted victims by the SS. Although nearly 6 million jewish people died during the war period, 16-20 million died in this time period at the hands of nazis.

In 1933 Germany began building concentration camps throughout the country. The outbreak of war in 1939 saw Jews being moved westward and many migrated elsewhere to avoid conflict. By mid 1942, remaining jews in Germany were taken against their will and hauled off by train to concentration camps, where they were killed by gunfire and gas chambers. Jewish people were always seen as outcasts, not only due to them being blamed for Germany's loss in World War I, the economic crisis in the 1930s, but also since the Christian's view of the crucifixion of Christ. They weren't the only victims of the Holocaust, but 16-20 million gentile victims suffered at the hands of Nazis as well. "That millions of non-Jews were also killed demonstrates the determination and magnitude of the Nazi extermination program to eliminate anyone who could even remotely be considered an enemy of the state" (Silverstrim). The victim's included Poles, Soviet citizens, communists, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, mentally and physically handicapped and prisoners of war. Basically, if you weren't 100% German or didn't possess the same views at the SS, you were executed.

I took most of my history classes in Germany, therefore learned this myth wasn't true. I took 2 years of history class in the States, where we briefly covered World War II. During this time, the class was basically taught that only Jews were victims of the Holocaust, which just isn't true.
