(the J is capital) and there is a underscore between justin and milam You may have heard someone claim "the fifth" on TV or perhaps even in conversation, when refusing to answer a question. Or perhaps you've heard people claim they have the "freedom of speech" when they've verbally offended someone. But where do these rights come from? The answer: the Bill of Rights, also known as the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The Bill of Rights defends individual liberties and states' rights. It is an incredibly important document, structuring much of American democracy and today's assignment is your chance to become more familiar with these rights and to comment on their importance. Please take a look at a list of the Bill of Rights and spend some time understanding what sorts of rights each amendment (one through ten) gives U.S. citizens or states. Once you have a good understanding of each amendment's meaning, please create a list of the ten amendments from most important to least important. After creating your list, please write an essay explaining the order you chose for your list. Your essay should be at least 1.5 pages long (at least 400 words) and should include answers to the following questions: 1. Why did you select certain rights to be among the "most important" rights today? What are some examples of times when these rights come into play? 2. Do you think the Constitution's writers imagined the circumstances that make your "most important" rights so important today? Or have changing times made your rights more important? Please explain your thinking. 3. Also, please explain why you put certain rights lower on your list, as rights that are the "least important" today. Do you think circumstances have changed since the Bill of Rights' writing that makes these rights irrelevant to many citizens today? If yes, how so? If no, why not?
