Human-Computer Interaction

1- Using Jacob Nielsen’s definition of Usability:
a. Are there aspects of universal usability that his definition does not address?
Nielsen details 5 components within the definition of usability, which are: Learnability,
efficiency, memorability, errors and satisfaction. Personally, I think those 5 components
perfectly enclose the aspects to have in mind when designing a product or application. Other
aspect like planned obsolescence could be discussed. Planned obsolescence refers to the
planned amount of time that the users will use the product before they think of obtaining a
newer model or design. Not always is necessary to take this in mind. Other aspect, which is
an important one is utility, which refers to the functionality of the design, asking, does the
product does what the user needs it to do?

b. Does his definition address the current diversity in human-computer interaction
devices?
It does. Prior to designing and mass producing a product, is important to test this product
throughout all of this components, because if the product fails in one of them we know the users
will stop using it, which brings the whole strategy down. The current diversity in technology and
how humans interact with it demands to have a fire test to be placed on each one of this products,
making sure the interaction with humans is going to be smooth.

2- Based on your experiences, do you believe that human-computer interaction
designers should have more education in communication arts and media?
Yes. Recently I was visiting an airline’s website trying to get a quote on a trip I’m doing out of the
country. The airline’s website interaction with the users was incredibly bad. I’m not that slow to
understand something but this website was just too complicated for users. You couldn’t
understand if the ticket was $290 roundtrip or one way. Therefore I personally think that every
designer should have training in c...
