Sustainability and its importance
Sustainability entails the development that meets the need of the present generation
without compromising the ability of the development to meet the needs of future generation.
Thus, sustainable development can be referred to as the process of change in which resources are
exploited in a bid to enhance the potentiality of both the current and the future generation to meet
their needs and aspirations (THIELE, 2016, 16).
Sustainability aims at the protection of the environment, enhancement of human health
and the well being while at the same time fostering innovation without compromising the way of
life of the people. The society has grown into a more modern consumerist with modernization
playing a key role and this has led to large consumption of natural resources by industries as well
individuals. In the long run, companies who practice sustainability in their operations ensure a
safe environment which is vital in the maintenance of ecological balance. More so, it ensures that
the well-being of employees within a company and the society at large. Consequently, the
companies are able to access the resources they need from the people such as labor, raw
materials amongst others (THIELE, 2016, 18).
Sustainable Supply Chain Management
The supply chain management at apple is a sustainable one. One of the aspects greatly
embraced at the company is transparency and this is reflected in the working conditions for the
employees, adherence to human rights, and preservation of environmental issues. The company
is vibrant in pushing for standards for the corporate social responsibility (BLUEMEL
OLDFIELD, 2016, p. 20).

To protect human rights, the company did away with excessive working hours while at
the same time abolishing labor practices that seem bondage or underage. Again, the compliance
of the suppliers of the company was about 97percent. In the case their suppliers underpay their
employees or breach employment regulations, the company forces the suppliers to repay the
employees (BLUEMEL OLDFIELD, 2016, p. 23).
Concerning the environment, the organization pushed their suppliers to divert their waste
from landfills and this led to the diversion of over 73, 000 metric tons of waste. More so, they
helped save over 3.8 billion gallons of freshwater by the suppliers in a bid to ensure its
sustainability. Finally, the company prevented the emission of over 13,800 metric tons of carbon.
As a strategy to reduce environmental degradation, the company has collaborated with industry
partners, governments, NGOs, and other organization that have the same our vision as them
(BLUEMEL OLDFIELD, 2016, p. 26).
