Free Speech

The middle finger
Digitus Impudicus, or displaying the middle finger, to a police officer does not
constitute a threat. Although this act has been dragged in many lawsuits, the defendants often
win the lawsuit. Although a number of these cases have attracted fines, appeals have often
overturned the cases. This is similar to a case in 1976 involving a police officer and a teenager
where the court ruled the act being offensive but not obscene (Mulligan, 1978). Similarly, a
similar counter case was won in 2006 after a man filed a lawsuit against a police officer and
the township for going against his speech rights by launching a legal suit against him the
previous year (Reed, 2006).
Gun control legislation
Gun control legislation is necessary to restore sanity in the streets of our cities. There
are many deaths that occur as a result of misuse of guns. However, the gun legislation would
help in regulating the use and possession of these guns as well as raising responsibility among
the holders. Although this legislation might not entirely regulate the possession of guns, it
would create an avenue for classifying guns as legal and illegal and, consequently, create a
platform for launching legal suits against the illegal holders and users.
Differences between libel and slander
The two terms refer to deformation. However, slander is the expression of defamatory
statements in a transient form of communication which is mainly oral (Gatley & Mullis,
2015). An example of a slander is issuing a defamatory statement about one’s opponent
during a political campaign so as to gain a leverage above the opponent.
