The American Civil Rights Movement remains one of the most complex and extended
series of occurrences in the United States between the 1950s and 1970s.It, however, has roots
going as back as the Civil War and slavery and repercussions that reverberate to modern society.
There are various causes that can be pointed out as explanations for prominent events during the
Movement-the Voting Rights Act, Montgomery bus boycott and Emmett Till murder. Some of
the significant individuals who played vital roles in the movement include Stokely Carmichael,
Martin Luther King Jr. and Orval Faubus (Hunt, Benford, & Snow, 2014). The Civil Rights
Movement was characterized by narratives, inferences on personal motivations and
reconstructing social structure and relations across the country (Hunt, Benford, & Snow, 2014).
The history of the movement has mainly focused on careers and biographies of significant
individuals. However, sociology has a role to play in constructing the Civil Rights Movement,
making better explanations and understanding of the period.
One of the areas of research in sociology that are specifically valuable in interpreting the
history of the movement are Doug McAdam’s Political Process and the Development of Black
Insurgency 1930-1970 (Hunt, Benford, & Snow, 2014). This is a perfect example of the research
