Description

My topic of paper is Ocean Desertification

Global Societal Problem, Argument and Solution

Prepare: The topic of your essay needs to be a global societal problem from the following list: adult illiteracy, funding for General Education vs STEM in primary and secondary schools, minimum wage, oceans desertification, overcoming the digital divide, refugee (escaping persecution, war, or death) crises, species extinctions (modern), tax havens, Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), universal statement of human rights (pick one), airport security, or wealth disparity. Review this GEN499 Sample Final Paper Guide for additional guidance on the expectations of this assignment.

Reflect: Based on the topic that you have chosen, you will need to use critical thinking skills to thoroughly understand how this topic can be a global societal problem and determine some logical solution(s) to the problem.

Write: This Final Argumentative Essay will present research relating the critical thinker to the modern, globalized world. In this assignment, you need to address the following items in separate sections with new headings for each:

  • Identify the global societal problem within the introductory paragraph and conclude with a thesis statement that states your proposed solution(s) to the problem. For guidance on how to construct a good introduction paragraph, please review the Introduction Paragraph Guideline from the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Describe background information on how that problem developed or came into existence. Show why this is a societal problem, and provide perspectives from multiple disciplines or populations so that you fully represent what different parts of society have to say about this issue.
  • Construct an argument supporting your proposed solution(s). Be sure to consider multiple disciplines or populations so that your solution shows that multiple parts of society will benefit from this solution. Provide evidence from multiple scholarly sources as evidence that your proposed solution is viable.
  • Interpret statistical data from at least three, peer-reviewed scholarly sources. Do this by discussing the validity, reliability, and any biases; identifying the strengths and weaknesses of these sources; and pointing out limitations of current research and attempting to indicate areas for future research. You may even use visual representations such as graphs or charts to explain statistics from sources. Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from your solution. Be sure to provide at least one positive ethical outcome as well as at least one negative ethical outcome that could result from your solution, and explain at least two ethical issues related to each of those outcomes. It’s important to consider all of society.
  • Develop a conclusion as the last paragraph(s) of the essay, starting with rephrasing your thesis statement and then presenting the major points of the topic and how they support your argument. For guidance on how to write a good conclusion paragraph, please review the Conclusion Paragraph Guidelinefrom the Ashford Writing Center.

  • Your paper should place the various forms of evidence in relation to one another and demonstrate why one form or perspective is stronger than the other positions that one could take on the issue.
  • Your paper should point out the limitations of current evidence and attempt to indicate areas for future research.
  • Writing Tools:
    • Before you submit your written assignment, you are encouraged to review the The Grammarly Guide: How to Set Up & Use Grammarly tutorial, set up a Grammarly account (if you have not already done so), and use Grammarly to review a rough draft of your assignment. Running Head: A GLOBAL PROBLEM

Adult Illiteracy
Globally, there is a substantial population that has not had chances to learn how to read.
The individuals lack basic reading skills. In addition, there is another population that can read
basic documents, but are unable to ready data that is a bit complex. These populations lack the
proficiency. The current world demands proficient reading skill because communication is
drifting from oral to written with the massive use of information technology. Many areas are
affected by the problem of illiteracy, and it been seen as factor that makes life a very difficult.
The illiterate population is not only the very old, but also the young adults who are in their late
teenage to early parenthood. Health is one area than demands literacy for improvements. Starting
programs that provides illiterate adults chances to study is essential for the improvement of
healthcare outcome worldwide. The efforts should benefit prisoners, oppressed women in
households, and people in rural areas of developing countries.

Root Cause and Effects of adult Illiteracy
Root Causes
Racism is the first cause of adult illiteracy. In many parts of the world where racism is a
stigma or at least was in the recent, education is provided to the superior race. In some cases such
as South Africa, the superior race was the White people who happen to be also a minority. In
Brazil, the same case applies. In the Unites states and France the black people are the minority
and they are still largely affected by illiteracy. In the United States, for instance, the Ivy League
colleges were meant for the White people during the establishment. At the time African
Americans and the other members of the American Minority by race had no chances to join
colleges. It was not until they began to fight to build the Historically Black Colleges and

Universities. This could not cater for the whole community, and very few even had high school
education (Simmons, 2016).
The second root cause of adult illiteracy is age. The majority of the illiterate adults are the
elderly at the ages of above 60. The percentage of youths who are unable to read basic texts is
lower than the percentage of the elderly people who cannot read the same. In a recent past,
education was not as available as it is in the current society. In some parts of the world like India
and Africa, independence was attained mostly after the 1950s. The population that was born
before that time was servants of the colonists. In America, as aforementioned, there were few
schools that catered for the wealthy class and the royals. This population is still part of the 21st
Century, and they are facing the same digital world that the younger people and elderly people
with education are facing (Heater, 2004).
The third root cause for adult illiteracy is geographical location and culture. In some cultures,
women are married as young as 9, and they begin taking family responsibilities. An example is
the traditions of some Indian communities and some African cultures. Once a woman is married,
they become housewives, and they are not allowed to go back to school. These cultural practices
are more rooted in the rural areas until present date. Most women in African, Indian and many
other underdeveloped regions lack basic reading skills. Another factor that can describe these
trends is the lack of educational facilities. In Africa, the Maasai Community of Kenya has their
boys become shepherds at very tender ages, mostly the school going ages. When they grow up
they remain illiterate since they get piles of responsibilities as they grow, and no chances to go
back to school (Kumar, & Sangeeta, 2013).
The other root cause is gender. Women make up a higher percentage of illiterate adults. This
is not a new trend. In the Eras of great philosophers such as Aristotle and in the Agrarian

Mesopotamia, there was segregation of roles. Aristotle himself described women as the weaker
gender that was made to be ruled. There has been segregation of women even in re...
