due March 28, 2017 Mid-term Take-home Exam 2 MUH 102 For March 28: Write Mid-term Exam 2. The exam must be word-processed, double-spaced, in 12 point type, in correct English and submitted in hard copy at the beginning of class March 28. Emailed or late exams will have the grade lowered by 5% per day late. EXAM 2 consists of one MAJOR ESSAY (750 words, 3 pages, more or less). Compare Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring and Schoenberg's song cycle Pierrot Lunaire. What is shocking about (1) the scenario, choreography, and costumes; and (2) the music (melody, harmony, rhythm, and orchestration) of the Rite of Spring? What is Expressionistic about the (1) lyrics (subject matter, images, and poetic forms); and (2) music (melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, and singing) of Pierrot Lunaire? EXAM 2 also requires three MINOR ESSAYS (250-375 words, one to one- and-a-half pages each) on the following three discussion questions: (1) When, where and what is cultural post-Romanticism? How does Mahler's Song of the Earth both sum up 19th-century musical practices and initiate 20th-century ones? Cite three examples for each characteristic. (2) Compare the impressionist use of line and color in painting with that of melody and instrumentation in music. Cite specific examples by name from the art of Monet and the music of Debussy to illustrate your points. (3) Berg and Webern were both disciples of Schoenberg. Compare the different ways they applied the twelve-tone technique they learned from Schoenberg. Cite specific compositions by Berg and Webern to illustrate your points. You will need to go to the internet for information. Please do research in the course text, on the internet and in the library to complete your exam. I recommend going to one of the following libraries in addition to the Sawyer Library at Suffolk University: the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, the New England Conservatory library (MBTA green line E to Symphony), or the Boston University library (MBTA green line B to BU Central). Include a bibliography of the items consulted at the end of the exam. There should be at least ten entries, two for each topic: MAJOR ESSAY questions (1) and (2), and the MINOR ESSAYS (1), (2) and (3).
