Puritanism was a movement protesting against the Church of England and the Roman
Catholic teachings and practices. They believed that the teaching and practices lacked godliness
and purity. This included issues such as kneeling and the having the sacraments daily. They
disputed these actions as not being biblical. This would later develop to new sects of religion
who had different practices unlike the Church of England and Roman Catholic. The development
can be divided into two; the first and second revolution.
The first great awakening happened between 1739- 1945. It was mostly practiced in
Northampton and Massachusetts. Its doctrines were mainly based with those of puritans. Focused
on; repentance of sins and personal salvation. George Whitefield had great influence on this. He
travelled through the colonies teaching on moral laws sermons and preaching’s. He carried out
revivals and insisting that slavery was not biblical, the slaveholders should release them. He
influenced the “back country” and non-wealthy colonist living further west to take revivalism to
heart and form new sects (Early American History) such as Presbyterians.
The second awakening was in early 1800s. Focus was based on overcoming sin and
living a life of perfection. The citizens were at liberty for it practiced free will. A person had the
