1. There are several points of view concerning the importance of maintaining biological diversity. For example, environmental groups in the Northwest want to restrict logging to save the habitat of an endangered bird. Timber companies insist that the well-being of one bird type is not as important as the well-being of the population who will be affected if the restriction causes the companies to lay off workers. How do you respond to these arguments? Is there a possible compromise?

2. Imagine that you are the "sustainability guru" for the world. Identify the three most important features of your policies for using and managing:

a) Forests b) Grasslands c) Nature reserves, parks and wildlife refuges d) Biological hotspots e) Areas with deteriorating ecosystems

Question 1
Biodiversity is an important part of nature and the environment since it boosts the
ecosystem. Each species no matter its population size has a major role to play in maintaining
ecological balance and sustainability for all life forms (Gillis, 2016). However, there are various
activities engaged in by human beings that sometimes threaten the biodiversity. An example of
such activity is logging which can primarily be described as the felling of trees, uprooting of
stumps, skidding and on-site processing of logs. In this particular scenario, the restriction of
logging will assist in the efforts of saving the endangered bird species in Northwest. The problem
is that Timber companies object to efforts of saving the species arguing that one bird should not
be responsible for the millions of jobs lost by the people working in the logging business. On the
contrary, the activity of logging has only been restricted to that particular region meaning that the
businesses can relocate to other forested...
