Policy makers with an in-depth understanding or a background in the areas that relate to
the committee they belong to are able to make effective and practical decisions on legislation.
Having a good understanding of matters relating to committee jurisdiction enables one to critically
evaluate proposed and existing legislation. This is achieved by considering all available facts in
line with the fundamental principles governing a subject matter. Lack of proper understanding may
lead to the slow legislation of essential bills in the process of consultation. At times, the individuals
selected for a committee or subcommittee appear not to be the best qualified to handle legislation
of particular subjects. However, legislation is not a one-man’s job so the members brainstorm and
put together resources at their disposal to arrive at the best decision.
It is possible for a politician to have limited knowledge of a subject matter but still make
the best decision. The major reason for this is because politicians are elected to represent the
interests of the people, not their own interests. Therefore, when making a decision, the politicians
have to consider what is best for those they represent. In federal offices, the number of
representatives with a background in health care is currently inadequate. In most cases, politicians
have the interests of the people they represent at heart. The reason is that they fear voter backlash
in subsequent elections. Greater professional diversity in representation would imply that the
