Mental health
A solid understanding of ethical principles such as confidentiality is very essential when
applying a theory. Mental health involves two key practices; using existing research to inform
clinical decisions, treatment planning and learning to use evidence-based treatment. They could
be specific and structured approaches to work with different populations. When dealing with a
mental health; client information could be everyday interpersonal adjustments, behaviors or
physical response. The next step would be, to apply counseling theories or models of
interpretation or explain the emerging issues. At this stage one can identify the areas with
difficulties such as behavioral response pattern, emotional reactivity or physiological
responsiveness. The counselor can decide whether to use client-centered counseling, cognitivebehavioral therapy, feminist psychology and many more theories.
Mental health professionals must learn to rely on the evidence they collect in the current
and previous research or from their clinical experience knowledge. There are four approaches to
consider; solution-focused counseling, eclectic mix, single theoretical approach and
psychotherapeutic integration of theoretical approaches. In solution focused counseling the
counselor comes up with solutions or problem solving tactics to the understanding of the client’s
situations. In technical eclecticism the professional is required to give rational decisions in
accordance with the clinical judgment. When dealing with the single approach, the counsel
focuses on a single model to explain client presentation according to model underlying
assumptions to understand the client. The professional selects the theoretical approach based on
the evidence and the treatment selection in his clinical expertise. Psychotherapeutic integration
relies on combination of more than one theoretical perspective to explain client presentation
according to models combined underlying assumptions. The last part would be conceptualization

which is a bridge between theory and practice. It helps us understand etiological factors and
sustaining factors contributing to client’s situation.
Substance use issues
Substance use issues could be trigged by environmental issues or they could be genetic.
Substance use leads to addiction which is hard to stop and one may need to seek help. Different
users have different symptoms or behaviors. Substance users tend to steal to get the drug or
others find themselves lying so as to get the substance. The first step would be identifying the
problem. The professional would ask the client to write down want he hates about the situation,
why he thinks he should stop using the substance, the advantages and disadvantages of substance
use. By doing this the professional will be involving the cognitive theory of the client. The
professional could decide to give medical prescription according to the clinical practice.
