Why or why not?
Stella’s decision on going back with Stanley
No. Stella should not have gone back to Stanley. Despite the fact that she has a new born baby to
take care of, Stanley is very violent and does not stop his behavior of beating Stella up. Their
basic attraction is only of sensual desires.
2. Williams frequently used symbols to enhance his plays. What did Cadillac symbolize in the
1950s (Scene 4 p. 1845)?
Cadillac symbolism in 1950’s
Cadillac ownership was an instant status as a symbol of achievement and wealth. It advertised
itself as “standard of the world”. It was an expression of prosperity and ultimate ambition. It was
the only car that had power in the public consciousness.
3. In Scene 5 we are given a number of indicators to the character of Blanche. Briefly discuss
three of them.
Blanche’s character trait
i) She is lonely- Blanche feels like she is not attractive enough for her softness to work. Also,
when a paper boy appears, she is immediately interested and kisses him briefly before going to
meet Mitch.

ii) She is deceptive- Blanche deceptions start to show in this scene after Stanley reveals his
investigations into her background. We begin to see the truth about her background and past.

begins to flirt with him while she’s drunk and eventually kisses him. She uses her body to buy
stability and comfort.

First of all, Blanche does not want him but she is looking for someone to help her with her
loneliness and Mitch didn’t realize this till the end when Blanche betrayed him. Blanche only
wants to bait Mitch into marriage, for security.

5. What caused the suicide of Blanche’s young husband and how did it affect her?
Causes of Blanche’s young husband suicide and its effects on her
Blanche entered a room unexpectedly and found her husband in a compromising situation with
an older man. Blanche later told her husband, at a dance that night, that he disgusted her. This
caused her young husband to commit suicide.
