Your initial post must be a minimum of 180 words in length Materials management is the management and control of inventory, services, and equipment from acquisition to disposition (Nowicki, 2015). The materials that are utilized in the operating room must be accounted for in an accurate and timely manner. While working in the operating room for three years, a Pxyis supply machine accounted for all the supplies and needed resources to control and manage cost. The Pxysis Supply machine is a secure storage device in which supplies are easily accessed while documenting real time (CareFusion, 2017). A mini Pxysis supply machine was in the operating room, and a larger Pxysis machine was in the resource room. With the supply machine, patient information was entered and then the supplies needed were selected with the quantity amount. The machine also noted what time the supplies were removed from the machine. In addition to retrieving the supplies, the machine allowed employees to return unused items back to the machine so the patient would not incur charges. From personal experience, the benefits to using a bar code scanner in the operating room is that it inventories all supplies being used. Furthermore, the bar code scanner helps to control cost and minimizes errors when gathering supplies. The limitation to the bar code scanner is that when the system fails or malfunctions, supplies cannot be used and then the accuracy of the inventory is compromised. The accuracy of the inventory is compromised because when the system fails, the patient is not charged and supplies can be removed without any documentation. Routine supplies were stocked daily with a par level and was readily accessible. With special items, manufacturers would bring the supplies with a bar code to be scanned. If the item was not used or opened, it was returned to the manufacturer. The supplies for a surgery case was gathered and pulled from the supply machines the day before the surgery case. This duty was assigned to a staff member daily. If the surgery was canceled, the supplies were returned to the machine. This system was very useful in minimizing cost, gathering and controlling the supplies going in and out of the operating room. References CareFusion. (2017). Pyxis SupplyStation system.
