Description

The Heart

Objectives

  • Identify the anatomical structures of the cardiovascular system
  • Explain how blood flows through the heart, lungs, and body
  • Describe the electrical conduction system of the heart
  • Explain the cardiac cycle, including how the cardiovascular system contributes to the homeostasis of the body

Assignment Overview

This practice exercise allows students to review the structure and function of the heart.

Deliverables

An annotated resource list of learning tools from the Internet

Step 1 Access and review the online activity:

External Anatomy of the Heart

Step 2 Access and review the online activity:

Frontal Section of the Heart

Step 3 Access and review the online activity:

Intrinsic Conduction System of the Heart

Step 4 Using the Internet, search for additional learning aids from reputable sources.

Using the Internet, search for additional learning aids from reputable sources. These can be animations, videos, diagrams, or any other type of resource that you find useful in your studies. Find at least one resource for each of the following topics:

  • Heart anatomy
  • The electrical conduction system of the heart
  • Blood flow through the heart
  • Blood flow through the body
  • The cardiac cycle

Step 5 Write a brief summary of each topic.

For each topic listed in Step 4, write a brief summary paragraph that explains the major highlights of the topic and briefly explains why you think the resource you have found will help in learning the material. Cite the resource appropriately.

Blood Elements

Objective

The heart is an organ that facilitates the pumping of the blood through the body. It
oxygenates deoxygenated blood and pumps it to the other body organs. The heart anatomy
consists of the pericardium which is a membrane that provides a fluid environment for the heart.
The pericardium functions include keeping the heart in its position, lubrication and allowing
expansion and contraction of the heart. The heart has three external walls including epicardium,
myocardium, and endocardium. The muscles have different functions. For instance, the
epicedium lubricates the heart. The myocardium provides the pumping mechanism of the heart,
and the endocardium prevents blood clots in the heart walls. The anatomy also includes the heart
chambers. The heart is divided into chambers including right atrium and right ventricle in the
right side of the heart. The left side has the left ventricle and the left atrium. The heart has valves
that prevent the backflow of blood in the heart. They include the atrioventricular valves and the
semilunar valves. The internet resource gives a comprehensive introduction to the heart and its
anatomy. It also provides an explanation of all components and their functions. Thus it enhances
additional knowledge of the anatomy of the heart.
