Topic
Right to health care
What were the key points of contention on this topic?
1. Autonomy: At all points of healthcare provision, the care ethic holds that
patients should retain control over their bodies. Healthcare providers only
advise on the best course of action concerning a particular health issue. A
contentious example of the practice of autonomy is euthanasia.
2. Beneficence: The medical practitioners must always act in the best interests
of the patient, no matter the situation. The contention arises when other moral
codes threaten to vitiate the patient’s right to the best healthcare. For
example, the health of people sentenced to death should not be compromised
just because they will die anyway.
3. Justice: The care ethic holds that every action of a healthcare provider
should comply with the legal framework of that particular jurisdiction. The
contention arises when one argues that some procedures may be illegal in one
country but legal in others e.g. stem cell transplants.
4. Non-maleficence: The caregivers must always strive to do no harm to the
Patient. Therefore, the carers should discern whether an act would harm the
society. The contention arises when a particular course of action harms society
but then benefits the patient. The abortion and stem cell research debates
bring out this issue.

What side of the argument (stance) do you take on this topic?
I am pro-care ethics. It is important that healthcare professionals act by a
code. The code should reflect the normative practices in that society. I support
the care ethic because it reflects the attitudes in society in a crucial
profession-medicine.

What strong points does the other side of this topic have?
The strongest counter-argument to the utilitarian ethic is that even though
utilitarianism seems to insist on the happiness of individuals (patients), there is
a tendency to drown out the unique individual perceptions of happiness. Thus, a
patient’s personal desires can be overshadowed by general perceptions of what
is ‘good’ or ethical.

What were the three most important things you took away from the topic?
1. The most important take-away from the topic is that health care is a
collective effort. It is not just health care providers that are in charge of
healthy living in society. Both the people that need the services and the
institutions that care for people’s health should work together to improve the
quality of life of individuals.
2. I learnt that the care ethic is the backbone of healthcare provision. It is
important that healthcare becomes pre-emptively responsive to the needs of
people in society. The segments of the population that are vulnerable due to age
and other physiological factors should be under the constant watch of
healthcare professionals.
3. The care ethic gives practitioners a set of morals that guides their decisions
in a consistent way.
