Description
Compare and contrast cat. 6 unshielded twisted pair (UTP), coaxial, and single mode fiber optic cabling types.
Describe one or two of the advantages and/or disadvantages associated with using each cable type for a business’s network infrastructure.
Consider the (a) cost per foot or meter; (b) termination/installation cost; (c) bandwidth; (d) cable length/transmission distance; (e) end point devices (i.e., workstation, wireless access point, switch, router, server, SAN, etc.) (f) use – in-building horizontal or vertical; and (g) conversion or interface equipment. Comparison between Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), Coaxial Cable and Single Mode
Fiber Optic Cabling
Introduction
A medium which information travels from one device network to the other is called a cable.
Usually, a network uses one cable type but in some cases, some networks use different types
of cables. Those cable types may include; Fiber optic cables, coaxial cable, and unshielded
twisted pair. Each of these cables can be used in a communication network. To develop a
successful network, you will need to understand the different cable types, their
characteristics, as well as their relationships to other network aspects (Bhardwaj, P. (2009)
Unshielded twisted pair cables
There are two varieties of twisted pair cables: unshielded and shielded. The text that follows
is based on the unshielded twisted pair (UTP).
UTP is not only the most popular but is also considered the best cable option especially for
school networking. Its quality may change from very high-speed to telephone-grade cable.
Inside its jacket, it has four pairs of wire. Every pair twisted with a distinct number of twists
in every inch. This helps prevent interference from other electronic devices as well as from
neighbouring pairs. The tighter the twist is, the higher the rate of transmission and the more
the price per foot. The UTP has a standard connector called an RJ (Registered ...
