Pericles (495-429 B.C.) was brought up in a well-known aristocratic family called the
Alcmaeonid family. His father’s (Xanthippus) great contributions and achievements to the
Athenian politics gave Pericles a strong foundation in the Athenian political life. From an early
age, a mentor known as Anaxagoras, an Ionian philosopher, taught Pericles. Anaxagoras
described natural physical occurrences using science instead of basing these occurrences on the
supernatural. In addition, Anaxagoras posed challenging questions concerning the traditional
religion and this angered most Athenians. However, this left an impression on the young Pericles
and he became excited and interested in this strange way of thinking. This contributed to his
passion for bringing about innovations of the architects, artists, and philosophers once he was
into power in Athens.
A polis was a close-knit, small society of the early Greek residents who approved of the
