Saving mothers’ lives in Sri Lanka
1. What are the cultural and historical features of Sri Lanka that contributed to the success of
the program?
Cultural features refer to the social behavior of a society whereas historical features refer
to the past way of life. In Sri Lanka cultural and historical features contributed significantly to
the success of the program intended to save the lives of the Sri Lankan’s mothers. Some of the
conspicuous features include excellent civil registration systems that provided credible and
reliable data from the health facilities. With the accurate data, the Sri Lankan government was
able to develop and implement policies that culminated to the success of the program.
Also Sri Lanka population encompassed knowledgeable and professional midwives that
saw the maternal mortality rate reduce significantly. Sri Lankan government having yearned over
time to raise the quality of health services offered in its health facilities, several interventions
were made to offer free universal maternal health care to its populace that consequently worked
towards the success of the program. The interventions that include financing also saw the
development of rural health network that significantly lend a hand in saving the populace from
an early death
2. If a country pursues a strategy of professionalizing midwifery as the “first line” support for
prenatal care and delivery, what are the other elements of the health care delivery system that
needed to be in place?

In addition to the elements adopted by the Sri Lankan populace and the government to
improve Health care system, other elements can be employed to achieve even more desirable
results. Some of these elements include, Antenatal care – this are interventions made to pregnant
women that involve screening, immunization and treating identified conditions.
Another element is Community mobilization – sensitization of the general public about
the need to seek medical care during pregnancy, at the delivery and post delivery so as to do
away with maternal mortality. Clean delivery kits would be another element that ought to be
incorporated in the health care system, according to WHO many maternal deaths are as a result
of infections that can be avoided by use of clean delivery kits. Training traditional birth
attendants is another element a country struggling with high maternal death rate ought to include
in their plan. Many developing countries still depend on traditional attendants, with such facts
countries ought to train and equip the attendants with skills to assist mothers so as to reduce the
death rate.
3. How do you think conflict and civil unrest affect the health of women and families in Sri
Lanka? What policy priorities would you pursue if you were the Health Minister? President?
