Case study research method is a great way of helping researchers understand a complex
issue or object which can extend a researcher’ experience or strengthen information already
known in the past (Yin, 2013). A case study places great emphasis on detailed contextual
analysis of a limited number of conditions or events and how they are related. Research using
case study research method is useful in examining life situations and the foundations for
applying ideas (Yin, 2013). This paper is an examination of how the case study method can be
used to examine how a set of users, non-profit-organizations use the electronic community
network. The study is an assessment of whether or not there are benefits that the electronic
community network offers to non-profit organizations and the nature of the benefits.
There are various steps involved in a case study research. Data is collected in the field
through careful observation of the object of the case study and identification of causal factors
associated with the phenomenon (Yin, 2013). Case study research uses field notes and databases
to ensure that data is referenced and categorized so as to readily avail it for any subsequent
reinterpretation. Field notes are used to record feelings and intuitive hunches, posing questions
and documenting a researcher’s work in progress. Field notes are record of testimonies,
illustrations and narrations that can be used in drafting a report (Yin, 2013). Field notes are also
crucial in identifying impending bias owing to a detailed exposure and patterns.
The researcher examines raw data with a variety of interpretations to identify any
linkages between the objects of research and the results with reference to the initial research
