I already had 4 pages proposal. Now it needs to be extended as an analytical research paper.

Teacher gave few commendations about the proposal. Please help me modify it in the paper.

Teacher's command:

The fundamental question of the paper is sensible and good: "Why has the United States become more polarized?" The execution of pursuing this question is a little confusing to me, from the proposal, though. Here's where I get confused: 1. It's unclear if by "polarization in Washington" you mean polarization internally, polarization as a state, or both. 2. The proposal is attempting to place abortion at the center of the analysis, but it's not clear how exactly abortion is related to polarization and, moreover, abortion is not mentioned in the thesis statement and political rhetoric around abortion is not mentioned in the argument preview, which discusses abortion law rather than rhetoric. How is abortion connected to your argument? 3. It's not clear how conflict theory can explain an *increase* in polarization--that is, conflicting interests within society is a historically norm. Is there reason to think that these conflicting interests have intensified, and if so, why so? That is, e.g., why is immigration more of a problem now than in the past? The argument preview seems to be aiming at a general description of human nature, but this can't explain variation--human nature is presumably a constant. 4. The thesis statement also seems to be somewhat at odds with the argument preview, in that the thesis states that polarization stems from "choices," but the argument preview mentions, e.g., race as a cause of polarization, which is both not a choice and also more or less a constant across American history. 5. I'd focus on narrowing down your explanation of increasing polarization to a few causal factors. Right now, the paper seems to attribute it to a wide range of factors that don't "hang together" that well as a coherent causal story.

Paper Requirements:

8-10 pages max; double-spaced; 12 point font; 1" margins

Citations are of your choosing but need to be a recognizable style (Chicago, MLA, etc.)

Scholarly sources in peer reviewed journals are always preferred and, at the very least, two should be present. Integrating more than two is helpful towards strengthening your argument, analysis, and grade.

Wang 1 Problem Statement Polarization has become an inherent problem within America’s socio-political landscape owing to a wide range of conflicting interests within the country. Among the manifestations of this hypothesis is Washington state’s party-based divisions that emanate from the different elements of conservatism and liberal ideologies. In this case, the central issue relevant to the state of Washington is abortion and the laws that define it. Problem Justification As already discussed, polarization has become a tremendous problem within the country owing to the evolution of the internal and external socio-economic and political interests of the country and its citizens. As a consequence, the unification of Americans through issue-based arguments is becoming increasingly difficult making it harder to secure socio-economic progress. Evidence on the legitimacy of this hypothesis can be found through an evaluation of the last United States general election where important matters such as immigration, security, abortion, and employment divided the nation leading to significant civil unrest even after the election results were announced. Considering the disparity from traditional temperaments, the inability or refusal of Americans to accept a democratic process makes it critical to question the root of the established problems. It is for this reason that polarization is the central issue. As already implied, one of the most polarizing issues in the country is abortion. An evaluation of the state of Washington vis-à-vis this issue reveals it to be one of least restrictive states in the country. For example, based on the Washington Reproductive Privacy Act, the interference of a woman's right to choose an abortion by the state is forbidden (Bartee 229). Furthermore, in the event that the Roe v. Wade law is overturned, the state has assured the protection of these rights. At this point, it is important to provide a demographic evaluation of Wang 2 the state. First, only three west Washington counties including King, Snohomish and Pierce account for over 50% of the state’s ballots during presidential elections which means that they have tremendous influence over regional politics leaving Eastern counties with significantly less influence (Carlsen 1). Based on the 2012 general elections, all three counties are considered democrat territories. Second, the state has emerged to become one of the most liberal regions in the entire Union despite its conservative history therefore accommodating the notion that a large conservative population is maintained. With these issues in mind, it is clear that polarization is indeed a problem. However, based on the satisfaction of more immediate concerns including economic interests (about two-thirds of the state’s residents live on its wealthier west-side), the manifestation of the social effects of these problems are significantly reduced (Webley 1). Research Questions 1. What are the reasons for polarization in America and the state of Washington? 2. What are the impacts of polarization in American politics and politics in the state of Washington? 3. In what ways do abortion issues affect the political rhetoric in the state of Washington? Thesis Statement Polarization in America is a consequence of conflicting social issues that emanate from variations in how American citizens choose to live their lives. As such, shifting social demographics as prescribed by the rising influence of millennials calls into question established ideologies. Argument Preview Chapter One: Introduction Wang 3 The first chapter will provide a superficial perspective on the research. As such, it will feature such sets of information as the background information, introduction, and issues relevant to the problem statement including justifications and the scope of the research. As such, one of the key issues will be a superficial investigation of social polarization. In this case, it is defined as the segregation of a community or society as a consequence of the conflict theory which states that human society is defined by competition for limited resources. With this in mind, an understanding of the underlying concept of the human condition as prescribed by entropy reveals the fact that humans (and all other living things) tend to a maximum and therefore act on the motivational desires to possess more than their companions. The primary objective of this chapter is not only to provide an overview of the direction of the research but also to ensure that a foundation for the understanding of the study is guaranteed. Chapter Two: Literature Review The objective of the second chapter will to to provide evidence supporting the hypotheses and ideologies presented within the research. As such, an evaluation of literary materials including books and journals will be necessary. Some of the important subjects will include the causes of polarization in America as well as its impacts. Causes of Polarization in America As already discussed, a vast majority of the causes of polarization in the country can be traced to the sociological framework presented by the conflict theory. In this case, competition for socio-economic and political elements results in the rise of conflicting interests and as such, an impasse is established whenever society is divided into two or more equally influential and powerful groups and subgroups. For example, an evaluation of the 2016 general election reveals polarization to have been based on social constructs such as race and gender as well as Wang 4 economics and immigration. Furthermore, a more devolved evaluation of the unions including states like Washington makes it clear that additional issues such as abortion and immigration greatly contribute to political polarization. For example, while abortion is greatly supported by the liberal majority of the state’s residents, the number of conservatists living in the state remains significant making it clear that population-based decisions (as defined by democracy) are bound to ignore the needs and desires of this minority group. By this logic, preferences in leadership, laws, and political ideologies are bound to vary and will definitely be exhibited in the course of democratic processes such as elections and the implementation of leadership roles including law making. Annotated Bibliography Conover, Michael et al. “Political Polarization on Twitter.” ICWSM 133 (2011): 89–96. Print. The case study is an investigation into political polarization as depicted within the perspective of millennials. It provides a thorough understanding of how social media (specifically Twitter) shapes political conversations. This is done through an examination of the networks of political communication while focussing on the 2010 US midterm election period (Conover et al. 89). It is however important to highlight that while the study does not provide a sociological understanding of the subject matter, it does provide a better understanding of how contemporary media has significantly raised the scope of polarization. Webley, Kayla. “A State Divided: As Washington Becomes More Liberal, Republicans Push Back.” Time 2013. nation.time.com. Web. 17 May 2017. The article is an investigation into the divisions in the state of Washington and the motivations for these divisions. In this case, it is important to highlight the demarcation of the state into Western and Eastern hemispheres coupled by an evaluation of the political mood in the Wang 5 region as prescribed by both liberal and republican (conservative) ideologies. It becomes clear, based on the domination of liberal ideas such as pro-choice concepts and the legalization of recreational marijuana that the state is indeed skewed against conservatism therefore paving the way for socio-political conflicts. This claim is based on the high number of conservatists living in the Eastern, low population counties of the state. Fiorina, Morris P., and Samuel J. Abrams. “Political Polarization in the American Public.” Annu. Rev. Polit. Sci. 11 (2008): 563–588. Print. This is a discussion on mass polarization in the United States based on recent observations. As such, it evaluates numerous kinds of evidence and suggests that a more detailed perspective can be provided through the analysis of citizen positions on public policy (Fiorina and Abrams 563). The authors also analyze such issues as party dynamics, party sorting, and geographic polarization among others. Levine, Phillip B., Amy B. Trainor, and David J. Zimmerman. “The Effect of Medicaid Abortion Funding Restrictions on Abortions, Pregnancies and Births.” Journal of Health Economics 15.5 (1996): 555–578. Print. The authors attempt to evaluate the impact of state-level insurance restrictions on abortion. This is done by assessing whether or not state Medicaid abortion funding restrictions affect the likelihood of pregnancy, abortion, and childbearing (Levine, Trainor, and Zimmerman 555). The article's contribution to the argument lies in its confirmation of the importance of conflicting interests within society and the likelihood of this contributing to society’s polarization. Bartee, Alice Fleetwood. Privacy Rights: Cases Lost and Causes Won Before the Supreme Court. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., 2006. Print. Wang 6 The writer confronts some of the most important social issues in America including abortion, birth control, gay rights, and the right to die as well as the underlying moral and customary issues. The author’s evaluations are based on the duties of the Supreme Court and the impact of its decisions to the evolution of society. The importance of this source to the essay lies in its depiction of abortion laws in the state of Washington vis-à-vis other states in the country. It is important to highlight the underlying conflicting interests of the issues discussed within the book. Wang 7 References Bartee, Alice Fleetwood. Polarization in United States Politics
Introduction
Polarization is significant in American politics, and it leads to the enhancement of the different
policies in the environment. The changes in policies lead to the focus on various systems in
American, and this means that there is the proclamation of the policies that they advocate.
Polarization has resulted in the debate of the legalized abortion, and this means that there is need
to observe the changes that take place in the environment. The expression of the negative effects
between the democrats and the republicans is one of the contributing factors of polarization, and
this helps in making sure that there reflection of the lives of the people. The politicians are
known to advocate for rights of the people, and this means that focus is on the protection of the
Americans from the issues that affect their livelihood.
The conflicting issues in the political arena contribute to polarization, as there are
different concepts of how certain things should be done. Washington is not devoid of
polarization, and this tends to paint a bad picture of the capital. The focus is on affairs that
involve the representation of the government. The extremes in the ideologies mean that there is
need to identify the scope of the views of the Americans as it is through this that there is striking
of balance in the powers that the government continues to exercise. The contribution of
Washington regarding politics is considered in low regard, and this means that it is important that

there is the determination of the policies of the government and the preferred states in the
analysis of the extent of polarization.

partisan issue, and this leads to the need to realign the actions of the people towards the
discussion.
There is the analysis of the views that conform towards abortion, and this helps in giving
people the ability to switch their allegiance to the parties that advocate for what they believe. It
