RACIAL INEQUALITY IN EDUCATION

Introduction
Pervasive ethnic and racial disparities in education system follow a pattern in which
African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and Southeast Asians perform differently when
compared to the Red Caucasians and other Asian-Americans. The racial disparity in education
has been a common phenomenon within the American society for quite a long time. It should be
noted that equal education is an entitlement to every American child as outlined in the Equal
Education Opportunity Act of 1974. According to EEOA, the American school system is
expected to value every student and give every American child equal education opportunity.
Although this legislation has been enforced, an ethnic and racial disparity in education system

disparities exist in education sectors, the notion has been misinformed. The overarching idea
here is that many minority children exhibit behaviors that are in contrary to American school
system (Kao & Thompson, 2003). For example, many African-American children exhibit violent
behaviors promoting a high rate of school dropout among the children from this community. On
the other hand, there is an overwhelming idea that the education expectation is lower among
African Americans and other minority groups resulting to a smaller margin of representation of
the minority communities within the education system.
