ELDERLY DIET

Introduction
Nutrition of the elderly people has become a major concern in the recent years. Eating well is
very important throughout life and at any stage of an individual but much care must be taken
when it comes to elders because as studies have shown, most seniors do not eat as well as they
can. Elderly people are at a higher risk of poor nutrition because in many cases, the signs and
symptoms of malnutrition are confused for illness. This is because of most of the times, elderly
people usually have various health complications. Nutrition for the elderly is, therefore, a topic
of major concern. The physical, nutrition, mental and social needs of elderly people will be
discussed in this paper.
Physical needs
The aging process affects elderly people physically more than in any other way. There are
numerous physical signs that portray old age. The skin of the individuals becomes loose and
wrinkles start to appear. The bones become brittle and more likely to break, which means that the
elderly should be protected from activities that are intense or likely to cause breakage of their
bones. The hair starts turning gray and their senses of smell, sight, and hearing become weaker
and in some cases begins to fail. The dental also becomes weaker and less functional. Because of
these physical changes, they may have physical needs such as hearing aids, glasses to see more
clearly. They may also need walking aids such as walking sticks or wheelchairs to make
movement easier for them.

Social needs
Elderly people are at times faced with depression due to lack of a healthy social life. This is
because most elderly people do not have their children around because they have grown up and
started their own families. If an elderly person lives alone, they are faced with higher chances of
being lonely and depressed. However, a social life where these elders are encouraged to go out
and make friends could be really helpful. There is so much an elderly person can do to improve
their social lives. Social activities that they may engage in may include; going for walks, playing
bingo, and doing all the things they wanted to do when they were busy raising children.
Mental needs
Elderly people have mental and intellectual needs as well. Just because they have grown old does
not mean that they should be denied the opportunity to learn new things. Most seniors are retired
employees and have been out of the learning field for quite some time. Activities, like watching
educational TV and reading magazines and paper, may help elderly people to stay mentally alert.
Nutrition needs
The rate of metabolism in the human body slows down at this age and therefore low-calorie food
with high levels of satisfaction effect like egg whites are highly recommended. Ginger and
Vitamin C consumption is also highly recommended as it is helpful in reducing possible cases of
arthritis. Vitamin C is also helpful in strengthening the immunity and making sure that the body
is resistant to diseases which are very common at this age. Spending 20 minutes a day in the sun
is recommended for older adults because they are prone to vitamin D deficiency. Excessive use
of supplements should be avoided and close medical attention should be paid to the elderly.

Conclusion
Basically, elderly people have needs like those of everyone else. They should not be neglected
by being left alone in a house with no one to take care of them. Where the need is, a caretaker
should be hired to ensure their physical, mental, nutrition and social needs are all fulfilled.
