Disscusion #1 The film Man and his culture focuses on the Cultural differences between the United States and many countries around the world. The differences that were mentioned are our appearances such as clothing styles, eating habits, and types of homes. It also talks about the similarities in the “culture of the groups”, they stated that all people in the group understand and live within the parameters of their culture norms. In the United States women were able to break the social norm of their place being in the home and are able to work but the view of women having children without a husband at the time of the film was a taboo. Everyone shares the need to have food, shelter, tools, and ability to use complex languages, gestures and have organized family structures. All cultures have “morey's” that dictate their social norms regarding what is appropriate in public, on the beach, in a restaurant and it effects eating habits, clothing and almost every other aspect of life. These morey's are learned through children imitating their parents (or other adults they encounter in life) or by direct teaching from parents, places of religious teaching and schools. Culture changes are made through the diffusion of cultural practices like agriculture, clothing styles and food items through globalization and colonization. My experience with culture beside growing up in the U.S. where we have many cultures and people with different backgrounds living in close proximity would be my cousins wedding. My cousin is Hungarian and Jewish, her husband is from Bangladesh and so they incorporated his Bangladeshi heritage into their wedding. The day before the wedding they had a party at an Indian restaurants banquet hall and the close family and wedding parties all came to celebrate. They served traditional Indian cuisine and the room was colorfully decorated and everyone dressed in traditional Bangladesh fashion (women in Saree and men in Kurta). The meal was eaten by using bread (Paratha and Na'an) to scoop up the food, some of my family members were uncomfortable with this and requested utensils. Only half of my cousin-in-laws family was okay with him marrying an American woman and they refused to attend any part of it. My cousins husband gave her beautiful jewelry to wear but no dowry was exchanged. They have since had four children and are raising their children to understand social norms here in the United States and in Bangladesh. Comment #1 Disscusion #2 I highly appreciated the lens created through the narrator. He helped the viewer to think of themselves as a foreigner of the human race and its culture. This helped me to really focus and understand the similarities and differences as well as the growth of cultures and culture itself during the time of that era. In the video the narrator mentioned how the people in the world are all considered human but live differently based on ancestry and culture. He showed some of the humans living in huts and villages, others living in homes. The people living in huts lived in very warm climates as well as some of the people living in homes. Though their climates may be the same, because of their passed down customs, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors this causes the differences in the way they choose to live. For example, in the video, he showed the Chinese race eating with sticks and the American family eating with silverware. The similarities in this situation is that they both are human and eat, but the differences is their eating utensils and what they eat. The chopsticks used by the Chinese/Asian race is an eating tradition and it helps to grab the type of food that cultural group eat. The American family using the silverware were also taught how to use the silverware to grab their food. I’m assuming both cultural groups were taught how to use their traditional utensils at the age you began to learn dependency. At my old, I grew close to one of my co-workers. She and I discussed religion, politics, family customs and traditions, love life work life, school life, basically all of the things the American workforce considers unprofessional to discuss. But as we discussed family traditions and cultures, she explained in her culture the parent’s pressure marriage and even sets them up on dates, but in my culture, the American culture it’s something the parents hope for and really don’t force or pressure you about. Comment #2 Disscusion #3 The movie clip from Man and His Culture helped me understand culture as an organized system of behavior that groups of people follow. This shapes the way of doing things, habits, and attitudes of individuals. In addition, a culture will consist of common motives and goals that will form the daily activities one takes part in. Consequently, individuals know the future they are working towards or the expectations of what is socially expected. The video clip helped me realize the similarities and differences between cultures. One statement that was mentioned that stood out was how important land is to shaping a group’s culture. I did not realize how vast the differences can be that form off of how you are going to provide food and shelter for yourself and family. The environment also plays a role in what is socially accepted or rejected. For example: if you are living in warm climates, a suit and tie is likely not typical business attire. However, just like a suit and tie, another form of appearance for business is accepted that correlates with the environment. My family lives in Michigan and has been in Michigan for a long time. However, my family is originally from the middle eastern part of the world. Although I’ve grown up in Michigan, I still find myself following a different culture than the typical American culture I’m around each day. Through my own experiences, I've experienced culture as something that is formed based off of your environment. While I am part of the American culture every day, my environment at home and my way of upbringing affects my behavior and way of doing things. A norm in my culture is to greet a family member such as your grandma with a kiss on each cheek – one left, then right, then left again (or in reverse order, but usually 2 or 3 kisses). This form of greeting is not typical in the American culture, but a wave, saying hello, or smiling is. Both cultures possess a greeting but the gesture differs. Comment #3 Disscusion #4 I greatly enjoyed "Man and his Culture", it's a very unique perspective on how otherworldly beings might view our various types of culture. I love how the video explains great differences, but still mentions the many similarities. It really gives a good perspective on our differences. I especially like the beginning when the narrator describes different walks of life, and the irony between them. I like how human nature in it's most basic form has so many similarities. Such as culture, which is based on geographical and historical differences. And those differences blend together to create culture. The video really made me see that people are really at it's core, the same. People have so many similarities like how they all have basic needs, all have concepts of the same emotions, all have been through adversities in some way. People have different kinds of the same things, yet there's such a huge rift between them. I once heard a great quote, can't remember who said it, but it went something like, "God gave man one world, man made countries." It really makes you realize that we choose to discriminate and separate ourselves. But at the same time, differences should be celebrated, not looked down upon. I think the key take away is that culture is something that we should see as something that makes us different, but in a positive way. When you understand culture, and various types of culture, you can see humanity as a whole. And I think that's a very important concept to grasp and understand. The video does a great job at showing how humanity does the same things, but have different perspectives on this. We're all really a perspective, and we see other people through that unique perspective, but it's important to realize that perspective is just one of many perspectives. Comment #4
