INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION Respect Hi, I have done most of my schooling in India so that is one of the things that I want to talk about in terms of respect for the teacher in general, any kind of teacher. Does not matter just academic teacher but also people who teach you music or any kind of arts. In India, especially when teachers are considered, they are considered a little higher than, even than the parents so you respect - when you respect them. When the teacher enters a classroom, you pretty much stand up and mention their name and say hello. That is the way you respect them, which is pretty different from what you do here where you can pretty much sit down, put your legs up, and relax back, and just say, "Hi." But it is kind of very different from where I come from and especially if the teacher is more somebody who teaches you arts, martial arts. They, you do not even pretty much sit in front of them many times unless the teacher says it is okay to sit. So that is how different it is in the culture. Formal When I, I moved here 3 years ago because I got married to an American and my daughter was 13 years old. And she started new school at 8th grade here. When she was getting ready for her first day of school she worried that other kids and teachers would not understand her English or that she would not understand them. In fact, her first day of school went very differently from what she expected. When she called me after school to tell me about her experience, about her first day of school she said, "I think teachers are crazy here." And bewildered I said, "Why?" And she said, "Well, they talk loudly. They speak loudly. They laugh loudly. They - and on the whole they are too happy." And she said, "And you would not believe it but they sit on tables." And it was something she had never seen in Russia and those like because Russian teachers are more formal and it is very different. But in a month, about in a month she loved everything about her new school. She liked her teachers. And I think if she would go back to Russia to her old school she would find her teachers a little bit too formal and distant.
