Forced ranking

Forced ranking method is a traditional method that has been found to be used in
various companies and organizations in order to help improve the performance of
the given company (Scullen, Bergey & AIMAN‐SMITH, 2005).

Some people have argued that the strategy is not applicable and is not meant to
work in each and every company.

By description, forced ranking method is a management tool that employs an
annual evaluation of the different employees in a given company in order to
determine the high performers and the low level performers in the given company.

The tool divides the entire workforce into three distinctive groups.

The first group is the first 20% who are considered as the “A” players.
These are the people who are meant to drive the future of the
company and are usually rewarded with a lot of stock options,
raises among other benefits.

The second group is the following 70% of the employees. These
employees are considered as the “B” players in the given company
and are the steady employees and are given lesser raises. This
group is encouraged to improve so that they can reach the top
level group.

The last group is the “C” players. This group comprise of the last 10%
of underperformers in the given company. The overall performance
of the “C” players may meet the set goals and objectives within
their areas of jurisdiction but their performance is considered to be
just good and not great.

This group is not given any raises or in anyway issued and or
subjected to any forms of training and bonuses and they would
prefer to be either fired or at a different place other than in the
company that they are employed currently.
